Luleå University of Technology is experiencing strong growth with world-leading expertise in several research areas. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national, and regional companies, public actors, and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of over 2.3 billion SEK. We have more than 1,800 employees and nearly 21,600 students.
Power Engineering belongs to the Department of Energy Science at the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. Within Power Engineering, we have close collaboration with industry and authorities, both in research projects and student projects. The research maintains a high international standard and is conducted in collaboration with researchers worldwide. Within the field of power quality, the subject has a strong international reputation thanks to world-leading research.
Subject Description
The research subject of Power Engineering covers studies of the system for generation, transport, and use of electrical energy, as well as studies of the interaction between the power grid, power generation, and power consumption.
Project Description
The project aims to develop models to describe how HVDC facilities affect and are affected by the power quality in the grid up to 150 kHz. Measurements will be used to further develop existing models and distinguish between primary and secondary emission as well as non-linear interactions. The results should form the basis for a general model for emission and immunity related to HVDC installations. The study also covers resonances, interaction between multiple facilities, and effects on transformers and other grid-connected equipment. The project is conducted in collaboration between LTU and Hitachi Energy.
Responsibilities
A doctoral position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a doctoral student, you will be trained in scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. You will also take mandatory and optional doctoral courses. Additionally, you may get the opportunity to try out the teaching role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which gives a fantastic opportunity to learn how to drive challenging development projects. Your work will primarily involve theoretical models and simulations, but measurements in both laboratories and the field may also be included.
Qualifications
You are eligible to apply for this position if you have a Master of Science (MSc) degree or a corresponding technical degree with a focus relevant to research in Power Engineering, such as electrical engineering, electronics, energy technology, technical physics, or similar areas.
Alternatively, a person meets the general eligibility requirements for postgraduate education if they:
- have completed a degree at advanced level,
- have completed higher education studies of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
- in another way, within or outside the country, have acquired equivalent knowledge.
Good knowledge of both written and spoken English is required. Previous experience of research, development work, or research-oriented education in a field relevant to the tasks is considered meritorious. In addition, the ability to contribute to the group's teaching (in Swedish) is also meritorious.
