Do you speak Finnish and want to teach our students in person in Umeå or via remote teaching?

Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Sami are national minority languages in Sweden. Students belonging to any of the national minorities have the right to mother tongue instruction, regardless of whether it is a living language in the home or not. This means that the student has the right to study the language even if it is a beginner's language.

The Municipality of Umeå WANTS MORE when it comes to the development of teaching in national minority languages, with a special focus on preschool and younger children. A longer development work is underway with the starting point of finding successful language models for teaching in and about the national minority language for both first and second language speakers.

We are now looking for you who want to contribute to our students continuing to develop their language, culture, and identity!

Employment Type

The position is a temporary assignment, part-time approx. 40%. The scope may change, starting 2026-08-17 through 2027-02-10. Any extension may become relevant. The position can be performed either via remote teaching or on-site in Umeå.

Your Responsibilities

As a mother tongue teacher, you teach students from preschool class to grade 9 together with other mother tongue teachers. The teaching comprises 120 minutes per week and follows the Swedish curriculum.

The role may include the following tasks:

• Plan, implement, and follow up on teaching in the relevant language
• Assess and grade in accordance with current regulatory documents
• Contribute to developing teaching based on our keywords: language, culture and identity
• Collaborate with colleagues within our Language Hub for national minority languages

About You

We are looking for you who are creative, self-initiating, and flexible, and who thrive in a dynamic work environment. You are curious and have a strong desire to both contribute to development and develop yourself. As a person, you easily build good relationships with students, guardians, and colleagues. Furthermore, you have good collaboration skills, are receptive, and can communicate and handle different situations in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. You take responsibility for your tasks and treat others in a accommodating and respectful way. We place great emphasis on your personal suitability.

Requirements

• Finnish is your mother tongue, or alternatively, you have good and documented knowledge of speaking and writing
• Approved Swedish B/Swedish 2
• Good digital skills
• Pedagogical education and/or pedagogical experience
• Valid extract from the criminal record, due to the Act on Suitability Control

Merits

• Knowledge of additional languages, preferably documented knowledge of Meänkieli
• Category B driver's license and access to a personal car, for on-site work in Umeå
