The Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies offers a creative and stimulating environment with approximately 100 employees. Subject Description
The subject of the appointment is molecular ecology with a focus on population genetics. The research focuses on ungulates and predators in boreal forest ecosystems.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor is expected to develop an independent research profile within the subject. The department will provide opportunities for professional development to qualify for promotion to Docent and Associate Professor within the subject area of the appointment.
The research is expected to be conducted in close collaboration with researchers within the department and at SLU, as well as through national and international cooperation.
In addition, the appointee shall:
- act in accordance with SLU's vision, goals, and values
- initiate the establishment of an independent research group within the subject area
- apply for external funding competitively and publish scientific articles
- participate in doctoral education as a co-supervisor
- conduct research-based teaching at all levels of the educational cycle
- develop pedagogical skills and meet the requirements for promotion to Associate Professor at the end of the merit appointment
- collaborate and communicate with relevant actors in the surrounding society
Qualifications
Eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor is one who has completed a PhD or has equivalent scientific competence. Preference is given to those who achieved this eligibility no more than seven years before the application deadline. However, those who completed their PhD or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
The Assistant Professor must have completed a PhD in a subject relevant to the position or have equivalent scientific competence.
Good ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, is required.
Documented ability corresponding to EQF level 4 to communicate in Swedish, both orally and in writing, is required.
Evaluation Criteria
The primary evaluation criteria for the appointment shall be the degree of skill required for eligibility for the position.
In the assessment for appointment as Assistant Professor, emphasis is placed primarily on qualitative indicators of the applicant's scientific competence in the subject of the appointment.
Additionally, the applicant's prospects for developing an independent research line within the current research area, and for meeting the requirements for promotion to Associate Professor within the framework of the merit appointment, are assessed.
Furthermore, the following are considered:
- ability to handle and analyze large and complex datasets
- competence in integrating genetic, demographic, and behavioral data to understand evolutionary and ecological processes in vertebrate model systems
- experience in developing statistical and genetic tools for basic scientific questions, theory building, and hypothesis testing
- experience in collaboration with the public and managing authorities
The appointment is offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is judged to have the best prerequisites for carrying out and developing the current tasks and contributing to a positive development of the operations.

The appointment is fixed-term in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance. An appointment as Assistant Professor is a merit appointment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An Assistant Professor has the right to apply for assessment for promotion to Associate Professor during their appointment based on criteria established in connection with the advertisement of the appointment as Assistant Professor.
