About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation services, remand prisons, and client transport.

Probation Norrland covers Västernorrland, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten counties and has staffed offices in Luleå, Gällivare, Umeå, and Sundsvall. Probation conducts background investigations and supervises clients who are conditionally released, under protective supervision, sentenced to community service, or monitored using electronic ankle bracelets/intensive monitoring. Probation also works with various treatment programs, and in Umeå and Sundsvall, also on-site at nearby prisons. Within Probation Norrland, approximately 180 employees and 10 managers work to reduce client recidivism and thereby increase safety in society.

We are now looking for a Probation Inspector for the Gällivare office. You will belong to the Luleå operational area but will have your main placement in Gällivare. Travel within the operational area is included in the position, primarily to Luleå for workplace meetings and to Kiruna for staffing the office two days every other week.

Job Description

As a Probation Inspector, you are responsible for conditionally released clients and clients sentenced to protective supervision who are under monitoring. Probation is also responsible for intensive monitoring with electronic control, so-called ankle bracelets, and community service. The work within probation consists largely of qualitative investigative work, conducting risk and needs assessments, case processing, decision preparation, and drawing up plans for implementation. You also work with leading treatment programs for probation clients. It is also important that you participate in active and legally secure exercise of authority and take responsibility for the security work performed by Probation.

As a Probation Inspector, you actively participate in influence work directed towards clients, among other things, through structured conversations based on CBT, motivating participation in program activities, and assisting in release preparations for clients admitted to prison. The duties also include conducting background investigations and submitting opinions to the court and proposing appropriate sanctions.

Qualifications

You have a good understanding of how humans acquire knowledge and adapt your way of conveying messages according to the recipient's conditions. As a Probation Inspector, you need to have good collaboration skills and be able to communicate clearly. You take responsibility for your tasks and have good judgment.

The person we are looking for needs to be calm and stable, with the ability to meet the clients we work with in a respectful and professional manner. Being calm and confident in oneself is a crucial trait. You should also have a physical condition that allows you to act physically if the situation requires it.

To thrive and succeed in your assignment, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans are capable of development. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute, through your approach, to ensuring that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

We are looking for you who have:

  • An academic degree (at least bachelor's level), preferably in behavioral science, law, social work, or social sciences, alternatively another academic degree at bachelor's level combined with experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service considers relevant
  • Good ability to express yourself well in speech and writing in Swedish
  • Category B driver's license

The following is also meritorious:

  • Well-recognized work experience within the prison and probation service, social care, psychiatry, or care and nursing work
  • Experience working with case processing in public operations with authority exercise
  • Experience in investigative work and preparing the basis for decisions
