The Area of Operation (VO) Clinical Microbiology, Biobank, Healthcare Hygiene, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Practicum consists of five operational branches:
- Clinical Microbiology: Region Skåne's laboratory for microbiological diagnostics and immunity assessments for infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
- Biobank: Includes the Central Biobank Unit responsible for Region Skåne's biobank as well as the Regional Biobank Centre South.
- Healthcare Hygiene Skåne: Region Skåne's expert function for preventing healthcare-associated infections and limiting the spread of infection within care and social services.
- Occupational and Environmental Medicine South: Expert operations tasked with investigating and preventing ill health related to the work and surrounding environment.
- Practicum Clinical Skills Centre: Region Skåne's center for clinical skills training and coordination of CPR activities.
Approximately 275 employees with broad specialist competence work within this area of operation. The position is located at Clinical Microbiology in Lund, where we annually analyze approximately 1.3 million samples within an analytical portfolio comprising more than 200 tests. The operations are accredited according to ISO 15189 and environmentally certified according to ISO 14001.
At the unit Culture and Direct Detection, approximately 50 employees work. Here, microbiological diagnostics are conducted with a focus on culture-based analytical methods to detect and identify bacteria, fungi, and parasites. The operations include, among other things, culturing, species identification, resistance determination, and microscopy, as well as the use of modern laboratory technology such as mass spectrometry and automated culture systems. The unit plays a central role in the diagnosis of infectious diseases and continuously works to develop methods and working practices to ensure high quality and patient safety.

Job Description
We are now looking for a biomedical scientist for the Culture and Direct Detection unit in Lund.
Here, the work is dynamic with constantly new challenges and development opportunities. At the unit, we work with a combination of traditional culture methodology and techniques such as mass spectrometry, PCR, and microscopy to detect bacteria, fungi, and parasites in patient samples. Parts of the culture-based bacteriology are automated with digital reading. You will collaborate closely with other professional groups in cross-professional teams responsible for different parts of the diagnostics.
Here, you perform all parts of the analysis process – from pre-analysis of samples to the practical execution of examinations and post-analysis. You are also expected to actively participate in operational development and in the supervision of students and doctors.
The work may involve evening and weekend shifts as the operation is staffed 365 days a year.
Qualifications
We welcome you who are a licensed biomedical scientist with eligibility to work within Swedish healthcare. Proficiency in Swedish, corresponding to at least level C1 according to the Council of Europe's scale, is a requirement.
It is meritorious if you have experience of microbiological diagnostics, preferably with a focus on bacteriology, mycology, or parasitology. Practical experience with culture-based analytical methods, species identification, and resistance determination is particularly valuable. Experience with mycobacteria diagnostics and/or sepsis diagnostics is also meritorious. Please describe your experience in these areas in your application.
