About SMHI and IT Development

SMHI's operations involve collecting weather, water, and climate-related data, which we analyze and visualize to provide decision-making support for policymakers and citizens. Our vision is a resilient and safer society – through reliable knowledge about weather, water, and climate.

The IT Development unit consists of approximately 55 employees working in development teams. These teams are responsible for the entire chain – from idea to operation. We build societal-critical systems that are used around the clock and handle large amounts of data vital to both society and SMHI's operations.

To meet new assignments and increased responsibilities, we are now strengthening our operations with several new software developers.

About the role

As a software developer at SMHI, you will be part of the team responsible for collecting data from oceanographic stations, converting and quality-checking the data, and delivering it to other systems within SMHI. The development teams have significant freedom and responsibility to choose the technologies, tools, and methods that best support the team's mission. Each team includes various roles working closely together throughout the entire development process – from requirements gathering to deployment.

You will work closely with both users and the business to understand needs and translate them into sustainable technical solutions. Development is primarily done in Python and in a Linux environment, where systems integrate data from various sources via API, FTP, and other communication interfaces. The work is mostly backend development, but some frontend development is also involved.

Together with your team, you are responsible for the entire lifecycle, giving you the opportunity to work broadly and take significant responsibility for the solutions being built. Operability and quality are important perspectives, as the systems need to be robust and available around the clock.

About you

We are looking for you who are an experienced software developer with at least five years of professional experience and experience in deploying and maintaining systems in a Linux environment. You have a post-secondary education in software development, computer science, or equivalent competence that we assess as comparable.

Other requirements are:

• At least two years of professional experience in Python programming and relational databases.
• At least three years of professional experience in backend development.
• Professional experience with APIs.
• Professional experience working in agile teams.

Meritorious professional experience with:

• Development of stable and complex systems with high operational requirements.
• Handling large amounts of data and various data formats.
• Handling oceanographic data.
• Work with various types of measurement platforms.
• The Django framework and object-oriented programming.
• Networking and infrastructure, as well as system architecture.
• Additional programming languages.
• Ability to translate requirements from stakeholders without a technical background into technical solutions.

As a person, you are secure and responsible, capable of handling complex problems and making well-founded decisions. You take initiative, contribute to the team's development, and have a genuine interest in finding solutions that work both technically and operationally. Since the work is done in close collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders, it is important that you have good teamwork skills and appreciate sharing knowledge with others.

We would also appreciate if you have the ability to support the team in planning and executing technical activities, as well as providing technical guidance when needed.

Location: Based at our office in Norrköping. The majority of your working time will be in the office, and you have the opportunity to work from home when it suits the operations.
