The Department of Global Public Health is an interdisciplinary department aimed at promoting knowledge about the challenges and opportunities for public health in a local, national, and global context. Many researchers at the department serve as scientific advisors to authorities and other decision-makers at regional, national, and international levels. The department is responsible for three international master's programs, and the researchers are actively involved in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The department has 12 research groups, approximately 120 doctoral students, and around 140 employees.
We are looking for a full-time Research Specialist for a fixed-term position of 12 months with the Research Group Epidemiology of Psychiatric Conditions, Substance Use, and Social Environment (EPiCSS) at Karolinska Institutet. We would prefer that you are at the beginning of your academic career.
Description of the Subject
You will primarily work on the LIV project "The Importance of Lifestyle for Health," which is a large prospective longitudinal cohort study including adults with alcohol dependence. The aim of the project is to study the long-term outcomes after addiction treatment and the significance of changes in alcohol use and other lifestyle factors for health. The project will contribute to developing and improving healthcare for people with alcohol dependence and increase the understanding of how lifestyle factors affect health in the long term.
Your Role
The Research Specialist will play a central role in bringing projects across the finish line by preparing data, conducting and refining statistical analyses, updating literature reviews, strengthening interpretation, and contributing to the preparation and submission of scientific manuscripts. This role offers a unique opportunity to deepen involvement in studies at various stages of completion, develop strong analytical and scientific writing skills, and make concrete contributions to high-impact research within a relatively short timeframe. The Research Specialist will work under the supervision of the lead researcher and in collaboration with other members of the project group.
Responsibilities include:
- Data management of clinical and register-based data
- Conducting quantitative statistical, and where applicable, qualitative analyses
- Supporting interpretation and contextualization of research results
- Assisting with literature reviews and updating/synthesizing relevant literature
- Contributing to the preparation, revision, and submission of scientific manuscripts and presentations
- Reviewing and organizing existing project material, including statistical code, data, and manuscript drafts
- Updating and refining statistical analyses of longitudinal data
- Conducting data quality control of complex datasets
- Supporting documentation and reproducibility of analytical workflows
- Assisting with the preparation and coordination of competitive research proposals

Qualifications
Eligible for employment as a Research Specialist is someone who has demonstrated scientific proficiency and has completed a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, as well as documented research work post-doctorate.
For the position, you are required to have:
- A doctoral degree in public health, global health, or a related field
- Fluent knowledge of English, both spoken and written
- Knowledge of statistical software (R and/or Stata)
- Experience in quantitative data analysis and data management
- Interest in clinical alcohol research and substance use epidemiology
- Documented experience in academic writing, preferably related to research contributions or scientific publications
Assessment Criteria
The following is considered meritorious:
- Good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written
- Experience with mixed methods and/or qualitative data analysis
