Trumpeter to the Life Guards' Dragon Band

Swedish Defence Music is the Swedish Armed Forces' function for Swedish military music. In 2026, Swedish Defence Music celebrates its 500th anniversary and has played a significant role in the Swedish Armed Forces and Swedish musical life throughout the centuries.

The Swedish Armed Forces has 28 military bands, consisting of the permanent bands of Swedish Defence Music: the Army Band, the Life Guards' Dragon Band, the Navy Band, and the 25 bands of the Home Guard combat force. The Wartime Organization of the Armed Forces' Field Musicians is part of Swedish Defence Music. The contract bands, the Air Force Band and the Gotland Band, are engaged continuously for musical assignments.

Each year, Swedish Defence Music carries out over 1,300 musical assignments through participation in state ceremonies, unit performances, public concerts, and tours - nationally and internationally, primarily within the alliance.

The Life Guards' Dragon Band is the mounted band. The Dragon Band is a brass band for parade and ceremonial music. The band also performs on foot and has an extensive concert activity. The band is located in Stockholm and consists of 30 musicians.

Main Responsibilities

• Mounted and marching music in ceremonial, parade, and figurative displays both nationally and internationally.
• Participate in concerts with the full band and ensembles.
• Participate in record recordings and live broadcasts.
• Collaborate in special work and production groups within Swedish Defence Music.
• Undergo ongoing riding training and perform stable duties.

Qualifications

• Music education at university level or equivalent competence.
• Mastery of Bb and Eb trumpet, piccolo, Bb and Eb cornet, natural trumpet, and fanfare trumpet.
• No allergies to horses or fur-bearing animals.
• Physical condition for mounted and marching music. The Swedish Armed Forces has a general maximum weight of approx. 95 kg for riders, as weight is added for equipment on both horse and rider.

Merits

• Previous experience with the Swedish Armed Forces, e.g., basic military training/conscription.
• Category B driver's license.
• Completed and approved riding course at the Life Guards.

In the recruitment process, you may be called for an audition.

Mandatory piece: Haydn's Trumpet Concerto, Movement 1 without cadenza, and Movement 2.

Etude: Kopprach no 30.

Orchestral excerpts will be sent upon invitation.

Employment

This advertisement concerns a permanent position with a six-month probationary period. Start date by agreement.

We apply individual salary setting. To be employed by the Swedish Armed Forces, a security clearance with register check is required.

The employment offers three hours of physical training per week during working hours. Training facilities are available near the workplace.

Other Information about the Position

As part of the Life Guards' Dragon Band, you will wear a uniform and work in varying environments, both indoors and outdoors. The position also includes work with horses in a stable environment. It is important for the employment that you undergo and pass the mandatory riding course.

The Life Guards is one of the Swedish Armed Forces' largest units with origins dating back to 1521. We train tomorrow's soldiers, as well as military police and personnel who will carry out international missions. We guard the royal castles, we have security and ground combat units.
