Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our strive to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions.
Description of the activity
The Research Group for Stem Cells, Aging and Neurodegeneration uses stem cells, cellular reprogramming, and genome editing to study and develop treatments for neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors.
The group is led by Associate Professor Henrik Ahlenius and consists of two postdocs, two researchers, and several master's students with diverse nationalities and professional backgrounds. The group operates at the Biomedical Center (BMC), Department of Experimental Medical Science, and is part of several Strategic Research Areas (SFA) at Lund University within stem cells (StemTherapy), neurodegeneration (MultiPark), and cancer (LUCC).

We are now looking for an experienced and ambitious PhD student who wants to broaden and strengthen our competence in advanced cell-based 3D tissue models and modeling of neurodegenerative diseases.
As a workplace, we value an open, inclusive, and equitable working environment.
Project Description
You will work on the continued development, validation, and use of new technologies for cellular reprogramming, 3D tissue models, and genome-edited pluripotent stem cell-based models of Alzheimer's disease. The work includes both the development of new models and the use of established models to study the role of glial cells in Alzheimer's disease.
The project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network VISI-ON-BRAIN, which aims to train PhD students in pioneering strategies for modeling brain diseases. The overarching goal of VISI-ON-BRAIN is to train a new generation of researchers with the skills required to drive the development of future therapies.

Tasks and Responsibilities
The main task of a PhD student is to engage in doctoral education, and therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
You will be responsible for the planning and implementation of research aimed at further developing and using genome editing of pluripotent stem cells as well as reprogramming pluripotent cells into neural and non-neural cell types. The results from these studies will form the basis for the development and analysis of glial cell interactions in advanced cell-based 3D tissue models of Alzheimer's disease.
The work includes genome editing of pluripotent stem cells, cellular reprogramming, molecular cloning, vector design, omics techniques, and bioinformatics, as well as cellular, molecular, and functional analyses, mainly performed in vitro.
The main task consists of laboratory work and data analysis. The position also includes presenting research results nationally and internationally, writing scientific articles, and contributing to research grant applications. Some supervision and teaching may also occur.
You will be part of two dynamic strategic research areas and have access to a number of career development activities.
We offer
Lund University is a government agency, which means you receive special benefits, generous vacation time, and a favorable occupational pension.
As a PhD student at Lund University, you are both admitted as a student and employed, which provides several benefits. Lund University has generous support for parental leave and favorable offers regarding training and wellness. Read more about being admitted and employed at the university's website.
As part of VISI-ON-BRAIN, you will be covered by the MSCA compensation package, which includes living allowance and mobility allowance, as well as a family allowance if applicable, in accordance with the program's rules.
