We draw strength from over 50,000 students and employees. Students who give hope for the future. Employees who every day contribute to Linköping University taking on the challenges of the present. Our core values rest on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and doing new things, we create a better future together, through both large and small actions. We welcome you to apply for a job with us!
At the Department of Science and Technology (ISY), we are now looking for two doctoral students in Computer Vision and Learning Systems to work within the newly established national centre for Heterogeneous Adaptive Swarm Systems (CHASS).
Your responsibilities
The doctoral positions are linked to the newly established and interdisciplinary Centre for Heterogeneous Adaptive Swarm Systems (CHASS), which is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). Within CHASS, leading researchers in fields such as AI, autonomous systems, robotics, swarm intelligence, advanced communication, sensor technology, perception, autonomous decision-making, human-swarm interaction, swarm control, as well as mission-adapted design and manufacturing, come together.
As a doctoral student within CHASS, you will become part of a strongly interdisciplinary research environment where the research covers the entire chain of technologies for drone swarms. You will work at the forefront of research in the field and join an initial group of approximately 15 doctoral students associated with the centre. The two current positions involve a research project studying perception for adaptive drone swarms:
- The first position focuses on auto-calibration for heterogeneous sensor swarms, with a particular emphasis on ensuring real-time consistency and precision in both sensor calibration and relative positioning between units.
- The second position deals with shared world models for drones, including the challenges of updating and maintaining the shared world model under uncertainty and incomplete perception.
As a doctoral student, you will focus on your doctoral studies and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20 percent of full-time equivalent.
Your qualifications
You have completed an advanced level degree in computer science/computer engineering, or applied mathematics, applied physics, and electrical engineering, where you have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level in computer vision or equivalent. Alternatively, you have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way. The requirement for a degree must be met no later than the time when the employment decision is made, i.e., when the employment contract is signed.
You must have good mathematical ability as well as experience in machine learning, programming, and analyzing visual data.
Furthermore, you have the ability to work long-term and drive projects forward even when challenges arise. You thrive working with a results-oriented approach and strive to deliver work of high scientific quality. The role requires that you collaborate well with others in the research environment while being clear in your communication. We place great importance on a quality-conscious work approach and that you have good linguistic analytical skills, meaning you can process text, theory, and research literature in a structured and reflective manner. Furthermore, you have a developed problem-solving ability and can analyze complex research questions, identify relevant approaches, and independently drive your work forward.
As our operations have an international character, you must be able to communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing.
Your workplace
The Division of Computer Vision and Learning Systems (CVL) at ISY has a dynamic research environment with a total of approximately 40 employees. This includes six faculty members, assistant professors, postdocs, and doctoral students, where doctoral students make up half of the staff, as well as several adjunct researchers. CVL conducts research and education at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels in machine learning for computer vision.
LiU has been mentioned as one of Sweden's strongest AI universities in Vinnova's report from 2025. We have ongoing research activities within WASP (Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program), ELLIIT (SRA), LiU's profile area VDF (Visual Digital Futures), and LiU Excellence Center AI4x.
