to apply for the job

The research group Organic Nanoelectronics, led by Prof. Simone Fabiano at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics, Linköping University, is now seeking a highly motivated PhD student within the framework of the ERC project INFER.

About the Project

The project aims to develop organic electrochemical materials and transistors for adaptive, brain-inspired bioelectronics. The focus is on evolvable organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), where the active channel can be modified during operation through operando electropolymerization, with the goal of creating artificial synapses with memory functions and low operating voltage.

Your Responsibilities

The PhD student will work on the development and characterization of organic electrochemical materials and components for brain-inspired bioelectronics. The work will combine material studies, electrochemistry, component fabrication, and electrical characterization.

The tasks include:

  • Investigating OMIEC monomers and their operando electropolymerization in organic electrochemical transistors.
  • Fabricating and characterizing evolvable OECTs as artificial synapses with memory functions.
  • Studying how material choice, electrolyte, and programming conditions affect film growth, component performance, energy consumption, and reproducibility.
  • Developing methods to control potentiation and depression through electrochemical processes.

As a PhD student, you will focus on your doctoral studies and the research project you are part of. Your role may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time employment.

Your Qualifications

You hold a second-cycle degree (Master's degree) in materials science, chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, polymer technology, or a related field. You have completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, with at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level. We also welcome applicants who are close to completing their degree.

Requirements:

  • Strong motivation for experimental research in organic electronics, polymeric materials, or bioelectronics.
  • Ability to work both independently and in teams.
  • Interest in combining material development, thin-film processing, and component characterization.
  • Very good proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

Merits:

  • Experience with organic semiconductors, conducting polymers, OMIECs, or organic electrochemical transistors.
  • Experience with thin-film processing, microfabrication, printed electronics, or electrical/electrochemical characterization.
  • Experience with polymeric, soft, flexible, or bio-related materials and relevant material characterization.

Significant weight will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

Your Workplace

The research group Organic Nanoelectronics, led by Prof. Simone Fabiano, focuses on organic semiconductors, chemical and electrochemical doping, and organic electrochemical components for future electronics. The group develops materials and components where the coupling between ions and electrons is used for sensing, information processing, and bioelectronic functions. About the Position

Upon starting the employment, you will be admitted to the doctoral education program. Read more about the doctoral education at the respective faculty: https://liu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning (https://liu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning).

The position is fixed-term for normally four years of full-time employment. Extension of the employment up to five years occurs based on the extent of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extension may be granted. You will initially be employed for one year, after which the employment is renewed for up to two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.

Start date: September 1, 2026, or by agreement.

Salary and Benefits

The PhD student salary is regulated according to a locally agreed salary scale. Read more about benefits for employees: https://liu.se/jobba-pa-liu/formaner (https://liu.se/jobba-pa-liu/formaner).
