The Department of Modern Languages at Uppsala University is currently seeking a University Lecturer with a focus on the Sami languages. The department has approximately 55 employees conducting research and teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels in several languages and literatures. We educate approximately 3,000 students annually across our more than 150 courses. In most of our languages, we conduct teaching and research within both linguistics and literary studies. Within the field of Sami studies, courses are offered in language skills, linguistics, and cultural studies (realia). Doctoral education is offered in Finno-Ugric languages, with a focus on linguistics or literary studies. Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities include undergraduate teaching and administration. Teaching also includes examination, course coordination, and course administration. The teaching, which is IT-based and delivered remotely, covers language proficiency and translation exercises as well as grammatical analysis with a focus on South Sami. Additionally, the teaching includes cultural studies modules covering all of Sápmi, including other Sami languages, as well as the Uralic context. The basics of Lule Sami are also included in the teaching.

Qualifications

To be eligible for appointment as a University Lecturer, one must have completed a degree from a basic higher education program in a relevant subject area or have equivalent competence and demonstrated pedagogical skill. The ability to teach in Swedish is required, as is previous documented experience of teaching Sami in Swedish at universities and colleges. The applicant must possess the personal qualities required to perform the duties of the position well. Such personal qualities include good communication and collaboration skills, responsibility, and flexibility.

Assessment Criteria

In the selection among eligible applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on broad competence within the field of Sami studies. Knowledge of other Sami languages besides South Sami is considered an asset. Great importance will be attached to digital competence and experience with IT-based teaching.

In the selection among eligible applicants, practical experience of teaching Sami at the undergraduate level will be primarily assessed. Additionally, pedagogical skill will be considered. The assessment of pedagogical skill covers both the planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching as well as examination. The pedagogical skill must be well documented so that quality can also be assessed.

Administrative competence is also significant for the position. Administrative competence is demonstrated, among other things, by the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an effective and purpose-adapted manner, as well as by the ability to set and adhere to timeframes.

The person appointed is expected to have their main working hours located at the department.

The position is a fixed-term appointment (vicarship) until 2027-06-30.

Salary: Individual salary setting applies.

Start Date: 2026-08-01 or by agreement.
