Are you passionate about making a difference for students in need of special support? Are you a qualified special needs teacher or on your way to becoming one? At Berzeliusskolan, you will help create a safe school environment where every student can develop in the best possible way. Welcome to us!
Your Responsibilities
As a special needs teacher at Berzeliusskolan, you will teach on the adapted high school's individual programs. The classes consist of approximately 5–8 students with intellectual disabilities. Additional diagnoses such as autism, as well as visual, hearing, and physical disabilities, are also present. You will teach in six subject areas based on the curriculum for adapted high schools. Teaching and developing students' language and communication, as well as fostering their participation and independence, are central to the role. Using digital tools is a natural part of your teaching.
In your work, you are expected to take responsibility for assessing the student's abilities to meet them where they are, with the goal of helping them reach as far as possible in their learning and development. You will create action plans as needed. You will base your work on scientific evidence and proven experience. You will plan, conduct, and evaluate lessons and the student's progress towards goals. You will collaborate closely with your fellow special needs teachers and classroom assistants. In addition to teaching duties, the role includes mentoring, which involves participating in student welfare work, contacting parents, and coordinating with other professionals related to the student, such as habilitation services, leisure time activities, short-term care homes, and taxi services.
As a special needs teacher with us, you are responsible for your own class and serve as a mentor. You lead the classroom assistants in their daily work and collaborate closely with them to develop teaching and create the best possible support for each student.
Your Workplace
Berzeliusskolan is centrally located in Linköping, in the Vasastaden district, within walking distance of the Travel Center. At our adapted high school, approximately 90 students attend the individual and national programs. We have approximately 85 employees working together to provide our students with the best possible support and development. The students have varying degrees of intellectual disability, ranging from severe cases with significant care needs to moderate cases, and in some instances, additional disabilities. Our goal is to create a safe and inspiring learning environment where every student has the opportunity to develop, both independently and together with others, socially, academically, and in daily life skills.
Our students have diverse needs, meaning you need to be flexible and accustomed to adapting teaching to each individual student. We have a strong Student Health Team (SHT) consisting of a counselor, psychologist, school nurse, special needs teachers/senior teachers, and principals who work closely with the class special needs teachers.
At Berzeliusskolan, we value a learning culture. We hold regular class meetings, check-ins, and teacher meetings every week. Professional development is a natural part of our work and is highly prioritized. Here, you have the opportunity for continuous training, including in TSS (Signs as Support) and other special pedagogical development, which we consider a significant benefit.
We are looking for you who are a qualified special needs teacher, graduating soon, or have the right background and commitment to this target group.
Who You Are
We primarily seek you who have a preschool teacher license or a teacher license with a special needs teaching degree specializing in Intellectual Disability. Secondly, we seek you who are graduating soon as a special needs teacher.
We would appreciate it if you have experience working with students with intellectual disabilities, and preferably also experience with autism. You view the use of low-affective handling as a given. You have experience with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), visual supports, Signs as Support, and technical aids. We would also appreciate experience working with students who have care or medical needs, where you combine learning and development support with individualized care.
You have a positive attitude and bring enthusiasm and energy to your work. You have a good ability to create participation in the operation and can build and maintain relationships at the workplace. You have a good understanding of how people absorb knowledge and can adapt your way of communicating messages to others. You communicate clearly. You are responsible and drive your processes forward. You are confident in yourself and can remain calm in stressful situations, using low-affective handling when students exhibit challenging behavior. You are flexible, solution-focused, and have an easy time seeing the big picture and different perspectives.
