Your responsibilities
The purpose of the appointment as Assistant Professor is to provide the teacher with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and gain merits both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility for an appointment as Professor.
The Semiconductor Materials for Components Unit at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) conducts research on the development of advanced wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconductors with applications in next-generation high-frequency and power electronics. The unit is also the host for the Swedish Competence Centre for III-Nitride Technology (C3NiT), a national platform bringing together academia and industry. Within this framework, there is close collaboration with industrial partners such as Ericsson, Saab, Volvo Cars, Hitachi Energy, and SweGaN, with the aim of developing and implementing next-generation III-nitride technologies. The research environment is characterized by scientific excellence combined with strong industrial relevance throughout the value chain, and actively contributes to addressing central societal challenges, including sustainability.
As an Assistant Professor, you will conduct research on the thermal properties of ultrawide III-nitride-based semiconductors for high-performance power and high-frequency components. The work includes, among other things, measuring thermal conductivity using transient thermal reflectance (TTR), electro-thermal characterization of component structures, data analysis, and the development of theoretical models for phonon transport and heat conduction in semiconductors. Furthermore, it involves simulating heat dissipation in various electronic components with a particular focus on thermal management.
The appointment includes teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels in Swedish and English, as well as supervising students at IFM, for example, in the Master's program Materials Physics and Nanoscience and the course Solid State Physics. The duties also include course development and responsibility for course leadership.
You are active within the research community, participate in the department's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through scientific publications, and contribute to attracting external research funding.
You actively contribute to the university's development work. The research on thermal properties of semiconductor materials and component structures is conducted in close collaboration with the Wide Bandgap Pilot Line and involves extensive industrial engagement. Research collaborations take the form of dissemination, accessibility, and utilization of research results.
The appointment may also include administrative duties, such as responsibility for the thermal characterization laboratory and user support within the Wide Bandgap Pilot Line. Interest in and participation in management tasks are encouraged.
Your work includes following developments nationally and internationally within your field of expertise and other societal developments that are relevant to your work.
You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the professional development of the work group, collegial working methods, and social community. We consider your presence and activity to be essential for you to perform your duties in the best possible way and thrive in the work community.
Your qualifications
We are looking for you who have a PhD or equivalent scientific competence. We primarily seek you who have obtained your PhD within the last five years.
For this appointment, special emphasis will be placed on scientific skill and experience of industry collaboration.
Regarding pedagogical skill, the following will be assessed:
- Ability to develop teaching material related to research activities, including relevant courses and educational components for doctoral students, is meritorious for the appointment.
Regarding scientific skill, the following will be assessed:
- Documented and extensive experience in the field of thermal properties of semiconductors (PhD and at least two years of postdoctoral experience) is a requirement for the appointment.
- Documented experience in operating and using systems for transient thermal reflectance (TTR) and pulsed I-V thermometry is meritorious for the appointment.
- Experience in structural characterization and electron transport measurements of materials and component structures, as well as TCAD simulation of semiconductor components, is meritorious.
- Basic knowledge in MOCVD growth of group-III nitrides and component processing is meritorious.
Of particular importance is documented experience in research collaboration. Experience from an industrial research or development environment, as well as a good understanding of industry-relevant processes, requirements, and applications, is particularly meritorious.
A strong commitment to scientific research and high motivation are fundamental prerequisites for the appointment.
Since teaching and/or research takes place in English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and/or conduct research in English.
