The Faculty of Theology at Uppsala University is Sweden's largest research and education unit for issues concerning religion and theology. In total, we offer 280 courses and programs with subjects ranging from major world religions to new value patterns, from text-critical biblical research to behavioral science, historical, ethical, and philosophical studies.

The position, which is 40% of a full-time role, is a temporary appointment pending a permanent appointment, starting from 2026-07-01, primarily for the autumn semester.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities include teaching, research, and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility and course administration. The position involves teaching in Swedish and English in philosophy of religion within the Theology program, the Theology degree program, the Master's program in Theology and Religious Studies, as well as current standalone courses. Teaching in interdisciplinary courses may also be included. The role also involves keeping up with developments within one's own subject and societal development in general.

Qualifications: According to the Higher Education Ordinance, eligibility for appointment as a University Lecturer requires a PhD degree or equivalent scientific competence, or other professional skills significant in view of the subject content and duties of the position, having completed higher education pedagogy training or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge and demonstrated pedagogical skill.

According to Uppsala University's employment regulations, there is an additional general eligibility requirement for teachers to have the other abilities needed to perform the position well. Those to be appointed as University Lecturers must, according to the regulations, have demonstrated the teaching ability required for the position and, unless special reasons exist, have completed higher education pedagogy training relevant to activities within the university. The assessment of pedagogical skill shall cover both planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination. The pedagogical skill must be well documented so that quality can also be assessed.

The ability to teach in Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment Criteria: When selecting among eligible applicants, equal care will be given to the assessment of scientific and pedagogical skill. Administrative skill and the ability to collaborate will also be assessed.

Scientific skill refers to research merits. Special weight is placed on scientific competence in philosophy of religion with a contemporary orientation. In assessing scientific skill, scientific quality will be considered primarily. The extent of research, particularly regarding depth and breadth in research fields relevant to the vacancy, will also be given significance. Scientific skill is demonstrated, among other things, by the publication of articles and/or monographs that have contributed to the development of the subject nationally and especially internationally. Furthermore, the ability to competitively obtain funding for research will be given weight.

Pedagogical skill refers to educational and teaching merits. The pedagogical skill must be well documented so that quality can also be assessed. In assessing pedagogical skill, pedagogical quality should be considered primarily. The extent, both breadth and depth, should also be given significance. Regarding pedagogical skill, experience in teaching within the field of philosophy of religion or, secondarily, related subjects is required. In assessing pedagogical skill, consideration will be given to experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching, as well as experience in supervision and examination. Consideration will also be given to the applicant's experience and ability to teach the subject both on campus and online.

Other Skills: Administrative skill is significant for the position and will be considered. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development work will also be considered.

Administrative skill is demonstrated through the ability for overall operational planning, skill in leading operations and personnel, and through the ability to collaborate. The ability to inform about research and development work is demonstrated through popular science activities, such as participation in public education work, publishing popular science writings, and participating in public debate on educational and research issues.

Salary: Individual salary setting applies.

Start Date: 2026-07-01.

Employment Type: Fixed-term appointment, pending appointment, primarily for six months.
