Your responsibilities

The interdisciplinary Centre for Heterogeneous Adaptive Swarm Systems, CHASS, is a national initiative funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). It brings together leading researchers in AI, autonomous systems, robotics, and swarm intelligence to develop new solutions for autonomous heterogeneous swarm systems, benefiting Swedish industry and society.

The doctoral positions in this call focus on research related to swarm coordination, self-control, and continuous improvement of autonomous swarm systems. The research will address coordination, distributed monitoring, and self-control, along with secure runtime adaptation, verified self-improvement, and continuous learning based on digital twins for reliable ad hoc-based heterogeneous swarm systems. Collaboration between the two research areas is strongly encouraged.

As a doctoral student, you will focus on your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20 percent of full-time employment.

Your qualifications

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our interdisciplinary research group. You should enjoy working as part of a team and be willing to learn from your colleagues, while sharing your knowledge and experience in return.

Scientific curiosity and the ability to think independently are important personal qualities. You are expected to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to the research group's activities. You must have very good oral and written communication skills in English. Good knowledge of Swedish, both oral and written, is an advantage.

You have completed an advanced level degree in computer science or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level in computer science, mathematics, AI, machine learning, or similar fields. Applicants are expected to have good knowledge of computer science, mathematics, algorithms, and programming. Knowledge and experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning are desirable but not required. Knowledge and experience in deep learning and generative AI are considered advantageous. Experience in basic-level research is an advantage but not a requirement.

Your workplace

You will be employed at AIICS (https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/ida/aiics) at IDA (https://liu.se/ida) at Linköping University.

Linköping University is a center for research excellence in AI with strong and broad research and education in AI, both from a technical and interdisciplinary perspective. It coordinates TrustLLM, a major EU project developing reliable and fact-based language models. It hosts Sweden's largest basic research program, Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), as well as the Wallenberg AI and Transformative Technologies Education Development Program (WASP-ED). It is the host for the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS), including a EuroHPC (Arrhenius) and an AI factory (Mimer).

Research on drones and swarm systems at LiU focuses on autonomous systems that can safely operate and collaborate in complex environments. The field includes research on the safety of critical infrastructure and people near autonomous systems, as well as control engineering, perception, AI, transparency, and human-system interaction. Through numerous national and European projects, methods for autonomous platforms and heterogeneous drone swarms that can adapt to changing operational conditions are being developed. The research is conducted in close collaboration with Swedish and international universities, research institutes, and industry partners, and includes both simulation-based development and validation in real-world test environments.
