Your responsibilities
The purpose of the appointment as Assistant Professor is to provide the teacher with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to gain merit both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility for a position as Professor.
The Semiconductor Materials for Components Unit at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) conducts research on the development of advanced semiconductor materials with wide and ultrawide bandgaps for applications in next-generation high-frequency and power electronics. The unit hosts the Swedish Competence Centre for III-Nitride Technology (C3NiT), a national platform bringing together academia and industry. Within this framework, we collaborate closely with industrial partners such as Ericsson, Saab, Volvo Cars, Hitachi Energy, and SweGaN to develop and implement next-generation III-nitride technologies.
The research environment combines high scientific quality with strong industrial relevance along the entire value chain and actively contributes to meeting important societal challenges, including sustainable development.
The Assistant Professor is to conduct research on MOCVD growth of AlN and related ultrawide bandgap materials, focusing on future power and high-frequency electronic applications. The responsibilities also include being responsible for and coordinating the operation and further development of the MOCVD reactors within the division.
The appointment includes teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels in Swedish and English, as well as supervising students at IFM, for example, the Master's program Materials Physics and Nanoscience and the course Solid State Physics. The duties also include course development and responsibility for course leadership.
Collaboration is an integrated part of the university's mission in research and education. The research on MOCVD is conducted in close collaboration with the Wide Bandgap Pilot Line and involves strong industrial engagement. Collaboration in research takes place through dissemination, accessibility, and utilization of research results.
The appointment may also include administrative duties, such as responsibility for the MOCVD laboratory and user support within the Wide Bandgap Pilot Line. Interest in and participation in academic leadership and managerial tasks is encouraged.
You are active within the research community, participate in the division's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through scientific publications, and contribute to attracting external research funding.
You actively contribute to the university's development work. The appointment involves actively developing and maintaining a strong research portfolio by identifying funding opportunities and applying for and obtaining competitive research funding from national and international funders, with the aim of ensuring long-term development and sustainability in the research activities.
Your work includes following developments nationally and internationally within your field of expertise and the broader societal development that is relevant to your work.
You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the professional development of the work group, collegial working methods, and social community. We consider your presence and activity to be essential for you to perform your duties in the best possible way and thrive in the work community.
Your qualifications
We are looking for you who have a PhD or equivalent scientific competence. We primarily seek you who have obtained your PhD within the last five years.
For this appointment, special emphasis will be placed on scientific proficiency.
The following will be assessed regarding pedagogical proficiency:
- The ability to develop teaching materials related to your own research activities, including courses and educational initiatives relevant to doctoral students and industry, is meritorious for the appointment.
The following will be assessed regarding scientific proficiency:
- Extensive experience in MOCVD growth of III-nitride semiconductors, particularly AlN and related ultrawide bandgap materials, including methods for growth optimization and analysis (PhD and at least two years of postdoctoral experience) is a requirement for the appointment.
- Documented experience in operating and managing MOCVD reactor systems as well as growing III-nitride materials and component structures is particularly meritorious.
- Documented experience in research collaboration is particularly meritorious.
- Experience from industrial research or development activities, as well as a good understanding of industry-relevant processes, requirements, and applications, is particularly meritorious.
- Experience in structural and/or transport characterization of materials and component structures is meritorious.
A strong commitment to scientific research and high motivation are fundamental prerequisites for the appointment.
Since teaching and/or research is conducted in English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and/or conduct research in English.
