Your responsibilities

The purpose of the appointment as Assistant Professor is to provide the teacher with the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to gain merit both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility for a position as Professor.

The Division of Materials Design conducts research as well as undergraduate and graduate education in Materials Science. The division is divided into three units, focusing on theory and modeling, materials synthesis, and materials analysis/testing. This appointment will be within theory and modeling, with close collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and experts in machine learning and language models.

As an Assistant Professor in Materials Science, you will teach at the undergraduate and advanced levels within the field of Materials Science/Material Physics, for example, in foundation years or civil engineering programs, and assist in supervising doctoral students.

Research associated with the appointment focuses on simulations of 2D and 3D materials using DFT and MD; predicting new materials, theoretically investigating relevant synthesis methods (chemical reaction pathways), and predicting material properties. The majority of the simulations concern 2D materials, primarily MXenes, both as single flakes and in multilayer form. A significant part of the appointment also involves programming and data generation, and conducting data-driven research via language models and machine learning models. This includes searching databases for information (for example, to find families of existing materials or materials with specific properties) and then using this as training data. The appointment also includes the development of tools based on language models to systematically search for information in non-technical research fields, in collaboration with researchers in the humanities and/or social sciences. A genuine interest in interdisciplinary work is therefore a requirement for the appointment.

As an Assistant Professor, you are expected to lead research projects, regularly publish articles in high-impact journals (high IF), attract own research funding, and develop and lead your own independent research group. The language of research is English.

You are active within the research community, participate in the division's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through scientific publications, and contribute to attracting external research funds.

You actively contribute to the university's development work. Collaboration is an integrated part of the university's research and educational mission. Collaboration in research takes place by spreading, making available, and utilizing research. Collaboration in education takes place by planning, organizing, and conducting good education in interaction with actors from the surrounding society.

The appointment may also involve administrative tasks, such as coordinating research meetings and writing applications regarding the division's need for supercomputer resources. We also welcome your participation and interest in leadership tasks.

Your work includes following developments nationally and internationally within your subject area and general societal development that is relevant to your work.

You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the professional development of the work group, collegial working methods, and social community. Your presence and activity are seen as obvious for you to be able to perform your tasks in the best possible way and thrive in the work community.

Your qualifications

We are looking for you who have a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence. We primarily seek you who have obtained your doctoral degree within the last five years.

For this appointment, special emphasis will be placed on scientific proficiency.

The following will be assessed regarding pedagogical proficiency:

  • Experience in co-supervising doctoral students and/or students is meritorious.

The following will be assessed regarding scientific proficiency:

  • Documented experience with DFT and MD simulations, both of 2D and 3D materials, is a requirement for the appointment.
  • Experience in predicting materials, their properties, and chemical synthesis pathways is a requirement for the appointment.
  • Documented experience in combined materials science/computer science is a requirement for the appointment.
  • Documented development and use of tools based on machine learning and language models is a requirement for the appointment.
  • Documented experience in interdisciplinary work, also outside technical sciences (for example, within the humanities), is particularly meritorious.

Meritorious for the appointment are

  • Documented proficiency in collaboration within research.

Other skills that will be assessed for this appointment are

  • Ability to summarize research fields in article form for a broad readership.
  • Collaboration skills across different research disciplines.
  • Ability to illustrate research results.

Since teaching and/or research takes place in English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and/or conduct research in English.
