The Faculty of Theology at Uppsala University is Sweden's largest research and education unit for issues concerning religion and theology. The faculty is the university's oldest and has been conducting theological research and teaching since 1477. In total, we offer 280 courses and programs with subjects ranging from major world religions to new value patterns, from text-critical biblical research to behavioral scientific, historical, ethical, and philosophical studies. The position, which is 40%, is a temporary appointment pending a permanent appointment, starting from 2026-07-01, primarily during the autumn semester.

Job Description: The duties include teaching, research, and administration. Teaching responsibilities include course coordination and course administration. The position involves teaching in Swedish and English within the Religious Studies program, the Theology program, the Master's program in Theology and Religious Studies, and standalone courses. Teaching in cross-disciplinary courses and international programs may also occur. The duties also include keeping up with developments within one's own subject and societal development in general.

Qualifications: According to the Higher Education Ordinance, eligibility for appointment as a University Lecturer is granted to those who have completed a doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific competence, or have other professional skills that are significant considering the subject content of the position and the duties involved, and who have undergone higher education pedagogical training or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge and demonstrated pedagogical skill.

According to Uppsala University's employment regulations, it is further a general requirement for teachers to have the other abilities needed to perform the position well. Those to be appointed as University Lecturers must, according to the regulations, have demonstrated the teaching ability required for the position and, unless there are special reasons, have undergone higher education pedagogical training relevant to the university's operations. The assessment of pedagogical skill should cover both the planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. The pedagogical skill must be well documented so that quality can also be assessed.

Ability to teach in Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment Criteria: When assessing scientific skill, scientific quality should be the primary consideration. The extent of research, primarily with regard to depth and breadth, should also be given weight. In assessing scientific skill, particular weight will be placed on the applicant having a doctoral degree in a relevant subject.

Equal care will be devoted to the assessment of pedagogical skill as to scientific skill. The pedagogical skill must be well documented so that quality can also be assessed. When assessing pedagogical skill, pedagogical quality should be the primary consideration. The extent, both breadth and depth, should also be given weight. Regarding pedagogical skill, experience in primarily teaching within religious history from a global perspective is required. In this regard, the applicant's ability to broaden the existing subject competence is seen as particularly meritorious. In assessing pedagogical skill, consideration will be given to experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching, as well as experience in supervision and examination.

Other Skills: Administrative skill is significant for the position and will be considered. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development work will also be considered.

Administrative skill is demonstrated through the ability for overall operational planning, skill in leading operations and personnel, and through the ability to collaborate. The ability to inform about research and development work is demonstrated through popular science activities, e.g., participation in adult education, publishing popular science writings, and participating in public debate on educational and research issues.

Salary: Individual salary setting applies.
