About the Workplace
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation services, remand prisons, and client transport.
The Vänersborg operational area consists of two prisons in Vänersborg and a remand prison in Uddevalla. Östragård Prison is an open prison with space for 192 clients. Brinkeberg Prison is a closed prison with space for 144, and the Remand Prison in Uddevalla has 57 places. We are a diverse workplace where correctional officers, administrators, nurses, cooks, teachers, production managers, managers, and others work. We are a modern agency offering development opportunities and challenges where you can help shape the future.
Job Description
As a correctional officer, you are part of a team where you have daily contact with the client. You will work at the remand prison or one of our prisons.
Working at a remand prison involves a focus on care and security and is a job with clear routines. Some people are held in pre-trial detention for long periods and only meet their lawyer and the staff at the remand prison. This places special demands on you as a correctional officer.
Working in prison is varied: care, surveillance, search, and security work are mixed with release planning, as well as counseling and motivational work.
You start your employment at the workplace where you receive an introduction over three weeks. After a period of service, you are offered a place on the mandatory 8-week basic training course at the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. You receive salary during the entire training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments are conducted regarding your possibility of permanent employment.
Qualifications
Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need good teamwork skills and clear communication. You must be able to act physically when required.
It is important to us that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute through your attitude to ensuring that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
We are looking for you who have:
- Completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
- Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not equivalent to employment
- Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
- Good computer skills
- Category B driver's license
The following are also meritorious:
- Work experience from corrections, security work, social care, psychiatry, or care and nursing work
- Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
- Relevant language skills
