Örebro University is seeking a doctoral student for a PhD program in Medical Science at the Department of Health Sciences, with studies commencing in Autumn Term 2026.

Project Description

DISASTER-CARE is Sweden's first national doctoral school in disaster medicine – a field of increasing importance in today's society, characterized by global crises and a changing international security landscape. The initiative is funded by the Swedish Research Council. The doctoral school is coordinated by the University of Gothenburg and implemented in close collaboration between some of Sweden's leading higher education institutions within disaster healthcare. It is aimed at you who, after completing the education, will work as a teacher in health and medical education with a focus on disaster medicine and crisis preparedness. As a doctoral student in DISASTER-CARE, you will become part of an interdisciplinary research environment where medicine, nursing science, technology, and social sciences meet. You will have access to a strong national network with doctoral students and teachers from across the country, as well as international opportunities through collaborations, guest lectures, and participation in conferences and research environments. You will follow the general study plan for doctoral students in medical science at Örebro University in parallel with mandatory and elective courses in the doctoral school.

More information can be found on the DISASTER-CARE website: https://www.gu.se/katastrofmedicin/forskning-och-utbildning/disaster-care-forskarskola-i-katastrofmedicin (https://www.gu.se/katastrofmedicin/forskning-och-utbildning/disaster-care-forskarskola-i-katastrofmedicin)

The project to be carried out at Örebro University concerns pedagogical perspectives to strengthen healthcare personnel's preparedness to work in connection with special events and disasters, with a focus on mental preparation. Both quantitative and qualitative studies will be included in the thesis. The exact design and direction of the project will be determined in consultation with the doctoral student.

As a doctoral student, you will be supervised by Karin Hugelius (main supervisor). You will also receive supervision from co-supervisors from Örebro University and from another higher education institution within the doctoral school.

The Education and Employment

The doctoral education consists of courses and an independent research project which you will present in a doctoral thesis. The education is intended to conclude with a doctoral degree. The education comprises 240 higher education credits, which corresponds to four years of full-time study.

Our ambition is that your doctoral education should be stimulating and feel meaningful from the beginning all the way to the doctoral degree. Providing you with a good introduction as a doctoral student facilitates the start of your studies and gives you a solid foundation to build your doctoral education on. As a doctoral student at Örebro University, you are offered a specially adapted seminar series covering everything from educational regulations and career development to support in your study situation and doctoral student networking.

Attached to the study place is a full-time doctoral employment during the period of study, which corresponds to four years.
