We are looking for a Research Assistant in Computer Science for a fixed-term position at the Department of Science and Technology, Örebro University.
Background
The position is located within the Department of Computer Science at Örebro University and within ARC – Centre for AI, Robotics and Cybersecurity (http://www.oru.se/arc). ARC is an interdisciplinary research and innovation environment that brings together expertise in artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous systems, cybersecurity, machine learning, computer vision, interaction technology, and applied computer science.
The research environment conducts research and development at the intersection of AI, robotics, human-machine interaction, and digital technologies. A key focus is how interactive and immersive technologies, such as extended reality (XR), mixed reality (MR), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR), can be used to support learning, training, visualization, telepresence, human-robot interaction, and the understanding of complex technical systems.
Responsibilities
The Research Assistant will work on the development of XR-based prototypes and interactive systems within the ARC environment. The work focuses on how immersive technologies can be used to create new forms of learning, visualization, and interaction in research and educational contexts.
The tasks may include:
- development of XR, AR, MR, or VR-based prototypes for immersion, visualization, and learning
- development of interactive environments in platforms such as Unity, OpenXR, or similar
- integration of XR systems with robotics, sensor, or simulation environments
- visualization of real-time data, such as robot data, sensor data, spatial information, or system states
- development of digital twins or virtual environments for training, demonstration, and analysis
- work on human-robot interaction, teleoperation, or telepresence
- design and execution of simpler user tests, experiments, or evaluations
- documentation of technical solutions, code, and results
- support for research, demonstration, and educational activities within ARC.
The work is carried out in close collaboration with researchers, teachers, and technical experts within computer science, AI, robotics, and interaction technology. The candidate is expected to contribute to translating research ideas into functioning prototypes and demonstrators.
Qualifications
A relevant academic degree in computer science, information technology, electrical engineering, robotics, interaction technology, or a closely related field is required.
The work requires experience in several of the following areas:
- programming in languages such as C#, Python, C/C++, or equivalent
- development of interactive software prototypes
- development in Unity or equivalent game or visualization engines
- XR, AR, MR, or VR technology
- integration between software, sensors, robotics, or simulation environments
- real-time data visualization
- technical documentation and structured software development.
Experience in the following is considered an asset:
- OpenXR, Meta Quest, HoloLens, or other XR platforms
- ROS 1/2, robot integration, teleoperation, or robot visualization
- digital twins or simulation environments
- human-robot interaction
- user studies, usability testing, or mixed-methods evaluation
- development of immersive learning environments or technologies for education and training
- visualization of complex technical systems
- work in interdisciplinary research or innovation projects.
Great emphasis will be placed on the candidate's ability to independently develop technical prototypes, work creatively with new forms of interaction, and contribute to research-oriented development within ARC's operations.
