Project Description
Doctoral Subject: Computer Science
This doctoral project will develop computational techniques, focusing on middleware for parallel applications, including quantum computing applications and/or machine learning applications, in distributed computer environments. The work will span from algorithmic development of orchestration and scheduling techniques, through design and implementation of system software and runtime systems for heterogeneous HPC platforms, to experimental evaluation of realistic workloads. The doctoral researcher will work in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface between computer systems, system software research, and computational science, with access to high-performance computing clusters, cloud platforms, and quantum computers.
Supervision: Ivy Peng is proposed to supervise the doctoral researcher. Decision is made upon admission.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed an advanced level degree, or
- fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
- acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
- Very good skills in programming and/or parallel computing.
- Strong background in computer systems.
- Initial research experience documented through peer-reviewed publications.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

- analyze and work with complex issues.
After meeting the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment
Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as doctoral researchers. The total employment period may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. An employed doctoral researcher may, to a limited extent (max 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral researcher is valid for at most one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for at most two years at a time.
