The Department of Molecular Sciences at SLU Uppsala is seeking a Senior Lecturer in the subject of Food Biotechnology. The department currently consists of approximately 90 employees and, together with three other departments, forms an inspiring research environment at Biocentrum on Ultuna Campus, Uppsala. The department encompasses several interacting areas such as food science, biotechnology, microbiology, inorganic, physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular structural biology, and natural product chemistry. The research revolves around applied and fundamental biological and chemical processes. The department also collaborates with industrial partners on the development of innovations significant for the transition to a sustainable society. The research area of Food Biotechnology conducts research and education within sustainable food and feed production, circular economy, and the fundamental physiology and genetics of microorganisms, serving as a basis for establishing new biotechnological processes for food and other biochemicals. The department's research in this subject covers both traditional fermented foods and the introduction of new raw materials into the food chain. Methods used include applied microbiology, advanced microbial physiology, fermentation technology, and downstream processing of microbial biomass, with a focus (though not exclusively) on yeast, other microfungi, and microbial consortia.

The department has advanced infrastructure, including modern fermentation equipment, food-approved laboratories, -omics platforms, plant cultivation facilities, advanced microscopy and molecular biology facilities, as well as spectroscopy, including NMR spectroscopy. The department also participates in the national initiative SwedNMR.

Teaching is conducted at the department in the subjects of chemistry, food science, and microbiology at both basic and advanced levels on educational programs leading to, among other degrees, agronomer, bachelor's, and master's degrees.

The environment at the department encourages research collaborations with other departments at SLU, nationally and internationally.

Subject Description

The subject covers Food Biotechnology with a focus on the conversion of raw materials into food through the use of primarily microorganisms' metabolic activity.

Responsibilities

The incumbent shall within the subject for the appointment:

• develop and lead internationally successful research
• develop, lead, and participate in teaching at basic, advanced, and doctoral levels
• primarily teach within food science, microbiology, and biotechnology, but also in other educational modules at basic, advanced, and doctoral levels
• supervise doctoral students and contribute to the development of the doctoral education subjects of food science and biology
• collaborate with other research groups within SLU to strengthen the university's interdisciplinary activities
• develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, relevant authorities, industry, organizations, and society at large
• apply for external research funding
• contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU
• communicate research results and other relevant information to the surrounding society
• perform administrative tasks within the department, faculty, and university.

The department has a bilingual work environment. The Senior Lecturer will be able to perform most of their duties in English. As a public authority, the university has Swedish as its main language according to the language act's requirements, and the incumbent is expected to be able to communicate in Swedish within four years from the date of employment. The department will support the incumbent in achieving this.

Qualifications

The applicant must meet the following qualification requirements:

• scientific proficiency in the subject for the appointment
• pedagogical proficiency and the ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into their teaching
• good knowledge of English.
