Are you ready to contribute to the future of research and education? Uppsala University now welcomes the finest talents in engineering and natural sciences to an innovative, world-class environment. Together, we push the boundaries of science.

The Department of Earth Sciences offers a unique interdisciplinary research environment, competitive funding, and excellent conditions for establishing a new research group and conducting cutting-edge research. The department also offers a start-up package covering your own salary for a six-year period, salaries for one to two PhD students, and resources to establish the research group.

Our department has a long tradition of excellence in earth sciences research and expects applications that are competitive at the international level.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in earth sciences. Here, broad expertise contributes to solutions for important societal issues. We are currently investing in renewing and developing our research infrastructure through the development of an infrastructure platform (Earth System Research Platform, ESRP), with a focus on both field and laboratory infrastructure.

The Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water technology, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. Over 300 people from more than 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and on Gotland Campus.

Our six research divisions:

  • Geophysics
  • Air, Water, and Landscape Science
  • Mineralogy, Petrology, and Tectonics
  • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development
  • Paleobiology
  • Wind Energy

Subject Area

To build a strong research operation, it is important that your research is linked to at least one of the department's research programs to strengthen, improve, and/or complement current activities at the international frontier. This may include the use and development of the department's research infrastructure platform (Earth System Research Platform, ESRP). Within the framework of dynamic systems in earth sciences, we particularly welcome research in the following areas (separately and/or in combination):

  • Interaction between spheres (the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and lithosphere) over time and/or in space (e.g., including geochemical or biogeochemical applications)
  • Interaction within spheres (e.g., creation and development of the Earth's lithosphere, studies of structure, dynamics, physical and/or chemical processes in the lithosphere)

Duties

You will work with:

  • Teaching. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration, and supervision of PhD students in both Swedish and English. If you cannot teach in Swedish initially, training in Swedish to achieve this ability will be included in your duties.
  • Research. Establishing and leading your research group's work, publishing research results in internationally reputable journals, and presenting them at internationally reputable conferences. Actively applying for and obtaining external research grants from funding agencies within the subject area and/or in interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Administration. Participating in the general academic work at the Department of Earth Sciences. This includes serving on committees, taking on responsibilities beyond your own research and teaching assignments, participating in the evaluation and development of teaching and research tasks, solving tasks together with colleagues, and helping and giving feedback to colleagues.
  • Keeping yourself updated within your subject area and following societal developments that are significant for your work at Uppsala University.
  • Contributing to collaboration with the surrounding society.
  • Actively working together with colleagues to ensure a good work environment.

In the selection among qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed primarily on both scientific and pedagogical competence, with particular weight given to scientific competence. In addition, administrative competence, leadership skills, and collaboration skills will be considered.
