Our values are built on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and doing new things, we create a better future together, through both big and small actions. We welcome you to apply for a job with us!

Your responsibilities

Subject area: Computer-based and experimental studies of the microstructure's impact on the high-temperature strength of austenitic stainless steels

Description of the subject area: The structural integrity of materials is of paramount importance in sustainable mechanical design, as more durable products lead to longer product lifespans and allow for the use of less material. Taking structural integrity into account in the design process requires a technical model of the product concept, i.e., a mathematical model of the product and its operating environment, which undoubtedly must take into account the material's influence and properties. This research position focuses on computational methods to estimate how the material's microstructure affects high-temperature strength, which can be implemented in technical models to support design decisions related to manufacturing and the selection of process parameters for components in the energy and automotive industries.

Responsibilities: The doctoral student will develop and apply computational methods, including machine learning and micromechanics, to predict the impact of microstructural properties on the high-temperature strength of metallic materials, such as resistance to inelastic deformation and crack growth. Areas of responsibility include the design and implementation of multiscale finite element models and machine learning algorithms, conducting and analyzing related high-temperature experiments, and collaborating with industrial partners to validate computational results. Based on this work, the doctoral student will contribute to writing scientific articles and presenting research findings at scientific conferences as part of an interdisciplinary research group.

The work is carried out in connection with an ongoing research project "From nickel-based superalloys to austenitic stainless steels: alloying, design, and material modeling for high-temperature strength," which involves several industrial partners.

As a doctoral student, you will primarily conduct research. A certain amount of teaching may be included in your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working time, e.g., lab assistance, exam grading, classroom teaching, student supervision, etc.

Your qualifications

To be eligible for the position, you must have a master's degree in mechanical engineering or materials science, or have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, with at least 60 credits at an advanced level in mechanical engineering or materials science. Alternatively, you must have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in another way.

Good programming skills and experience with finite element analysis (FEA) are required. Knowledge of machine learning, Matlab, and Abaqus is also highly desirable. Experience with microstructural modeling, automation of FEA models via scripts, and user-defined material modeling is desirable but not required. Furthermore, excellent communication skills are required, including good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English.

To succeed in doctoral studies, the doctoral student must be goal-oriented and persistent in their work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed based on their ability to work independently, collaborate with others, demonstrate a professional attitude, and analyze complex issues.

Your workplace

You will work at the Division of Structural Materials at Linköping University. The division conducts research as well as undergraduate and graduate education in Materials Science.

The employment is fixed-term for normally four years full-time. Extension of employment up to five years occurs based on the extent of teaching and institutional assignments. Under special circumstances, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, after which the employment is renewed for up to two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.
