Do you have experience in programming and an interest in aviation, logistics, and sustainability? We are now seeking a PhD student in Air Logistics who is offered a unique opportunity to combine advanced modeling and analysis with realistic applications in an international research environment. You will become part of a research project focused on developing more environmentally efficient arrival procedures at an airport.
Your responsibilities
As a PhD student, you will dedicate yourself to your doctoral studies and the research project you are part of. Your duties may also include teaching or other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time employment.
You will contribute to a research project focused on optimizing arrival procedures at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The project aims to improve the environmental performance of flight operations by developing and evaluating more efficient arrival strategies.
Your work will involve the analysis and modeling of new operational concepts, as well as evaluating their impact on air traffic control. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding how these changes affect air traffic controllers' workload, decision-making, and overall performance.
Your qualifications
You hold an advanced level degree (Master's degree) in computer science, mathematics, or engineering, or have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at an advanced level, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.
Documented programming experience is required to successfully carry out the tasks within this project. Previous experience with, or basic knowledge of, air traffic control and airspace operations is considered advantageous. A background in aerospace engineering, particularly with a focus on aircraft design, is also considered advantageous.
You are expected to have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
We are looking for a person who takes initiative, takes responsibility for their work, and drives tasks forward with persistence to achieve results. Good teamwork skills are crucial; you are attentive to your surroundings and communicate effectively in a team environment.
You have strong problem-solving skills and thrive when working with complex issues. You have the ability to understand advanced technical and scientific material as well as to produce high-quality texts yourself. Furthermore, you have a good ability to assimilate scientific literature and to solve quantitative tasks efficiently.
Great importance will be attached to personal qualities and suitability for the position.
Your workplace
You will belong to the School of Science and Engineering (ITN) (https://liu.se/organisation/liu/itn) at Linköping University, which is known for its activities within logistics, visualization, and organic electronics. We combine academic excellence with fruitful collaboration with the surrounding society. The employment belongs to the Division of Transport and Society (KTS) (https://liu.se/organisation/liu/itn/kts), which is one of the largest environments in the Nordics for research and education in the field of transport. The activities are carried out within the units Traffic Systems, Quantitative Logistics, Air Logistics, Railways and Public Transport, Mobile Telecommunications, Construction Logistics, and Construction Technology. The research is primarily externally funded and is conducted in close collaboration with industry, authorities, and society. Within undergraduate education, we are responsible for six educational programs.
Within the Air Logistics unit, we apply a systems analytical perspective combined with engineering methodology to analyze, plan, model, and simulate logistics-related problems within aviation. Our research also covers adjacent areas, such as operational efficiency, sustainability, and decision support in complex transport systems.
The work is carried out in close collaboration with industrial and institutional actors, combining theoretical development with practical applications. Through advanced analysis and simulation tools, we contribute to developing future efficient and sustainable air transport systems.
