Department of Clinical Sciences

The Department of Clinical Sciences conducts basic education, research, and doctoral education within the scientific fields of veterinary medicine and animal care. We contribute to continuous knowledge development regarding animal health and diseases at both the individual and population levels.

The department's activities primarily concern common Swedish domesticated animal species (livestock) with a focus on anesthesiology, imaging diagnostics, animal care, epidemiology, laboratory animal science, surgery, clinical chemistry, medicine, and livestock reproduction. Additionally, the SLU University Animal Hospital (UDS) forms an integrated part of the department.

Subject Description

The subject is large animal surgery with a focus on horses, but also includes ruminants and pigs.

Responsibilities

The incumbent shall within the subject of employment:

  • develop and lead internationally successful research
  • develop, lead, and participate in teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
  • develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, relevant authorities, industry, organizations, and society at large
  • collaborate with other research groups within SLU to strengthen the university's interdisciplinary activities
  • apply for external research funding at both national and international levels
  • supervise doctoral students and candidates during specialist training
  • actively participate in clinical work and teaching
  • contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU
  • communicate research results and other relevant subject information to the surrounding society
  • perform administrative tasks within the department, faculty, and university.

The department has a bilingual work environment. The professor will be able to perform most of their duties in English. As a public authority, the university has Swedish as its main language according to the Language Act requirements, and the incumbent is expected to be able to communicate in Swedish within two years from the start of employment. The department will support the incumbent in achieving this.

Qualifications

The applicant must:

  • hold a veterinary degree
  • hold a Swedish veterinary license, or be eligible to obtain one in accordance with current applicable legislation, regulations, and directives*
  • hold a PhD and docent qualification or equivalent scientific competence
  • be scientifically proficient in the subject of employment
  • be pedagogically proficient and have the ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into their teaching
  • have documented current clinical experience in a subject relevant to the employment
  • have good knowledge of English.
