Subject

Design, with a focus on Embedded Design

Subject Description

At HDK-Valand, design as a subject integrates practice-based, theoretical, and societal issues. We focus on design as an artistic transformative practice and as part of various social, cultural, economic, and technical contexts now, historically, and in the future. This includes knowledge development about design work as a reflective practice from an inside perspective, to theory formation.

HDK-Valand's academic program in design takes a holistic perspective on design and particularly focuses on the creative skills that are at the core of an artistic practice. Our programs dissolve the boundaries that separate traditional design areas, allowing our students to immerse themselves in visualizations, artifacts, and services within the broader overlapping design field. This includes environments, processes, structures, and systems in an interdisciplinary spirit, where emphasis is placed on ethical, social, and societal aspects of design.

Design, with a focus on Embedded Design:

The master's program Embedded Design combines organizational knowledge with an artistic approach in collaborative processes. Students in the program learn to act as catalysts for change, drive innovation, and sustainable practices through empathy, co-creation, and the ability to navigate complex systems. The concept of Embedded Design refers to the designer's role in organizational contexts, and the program gives students the opportunity to develop an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to design. Organizations in the public, private, and third sectors, as well as other faculties at the university, contribute to an interdisciplinary perspective and enrich education through collaborations, lectures, workshops, and real projects. Finally, Embedded Design emphasizes the designer's role in shaping both material and relational systems for change, particularly in complex and sustainable contexts.
