Project Description

PhD Subject: Electrical and Systems Engineering

Are you interested in working in a European doctoral network focused on cybersecurity and resilience within critical infrastructure, alongside leading researchers from across Europe? We invite you to apply for PhD positions within SecReSy4You, funded by Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).

The network will train ten PhD candidates and includes a training program that well prepares for careers in this rapidly growing field.

The advertisement concerns the position at the Department of Automatic Control, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, www.kth.se/dcs/ (http://www.kth.se/dcs/)). The department conducts leading research in control systems and cyber-physical systems in collaboration with industrial and academic partners within the network (e.g., ABB, TU/e, and Saarland Univ.).

The PhD position at KTH will focus on optimizing security and performance in various control architectures. We will work on threat modeling, multi-layer detection of attacks, and game theory for trade-offs between performance and security. The applicant should have a strong interest in and competence in control theory and mathematics.

Supervision: Henrik Sandberg, György Dán, and Karl Henrik Johansson are proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. Decisions will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission

To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

  • Mobility rules – Candidates must not have been resident or had their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months during the 3 years immediately preceding the recruitment date.
  • have obtained a master's degree, or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
  • acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

In addition to the above, the following specific eligibility requirements apply:

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in technical physics/mathematics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or another relevant field
  • strong background in control engineering and systems theory
  • high proficiency in programming (C, C++, Python, Julia, or MATLAB)
  • very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, and
  • knowledge of cybersecurity is an advantage.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

To succeed in your PhD studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:

  • independently drive your work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach, and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.

After the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.

Information on Admission and Employment

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within e.g., education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

Compensation – In addition to the base salary mentioned in the link above, a mobility allowance and possibly a family allowance are included in all positions within the Marie Curie program. For more information, read here. Base salary and additional allowances are stated before tax.

  • Copies of diplomas and transcripts from previous university studies and certificates of fulfilled language requirements (see above). Translations into English or Swedish if the original document is not issued in one of these languages. Copies of originals must be certified.

  • Representative publications or technical reports (e.g., thesis).
