The Department of English offers education at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels and is part of the Faculty of Humanities.

Research Subjects

Among the research subjects, early modern literature, 19th-century literature, modernism, 20th-century literature, narratology, and critical theory stand out, with a strong profile in postcolonial and world literature.

Eligibility Requirements

To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have general and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the application deadline.

You have general eligibility if you have completed a degree at the advanced level or have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in or outside the country.

To obtain specific eligibility for access to doctoral education in English, it is required to have completed courses at the advanced level of at least 30 hp within one of the main areas of English with a linguistic focus or English with a literary focus (alternatively general linguistics or general literary studies) including a thesis of at least 15 hp with a passing grade.

In addition, specific eligibility requires that the applicant can document language proficiency in English through one of the following internationally recognized language proficiency tests: TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Edition or TOEFL iBT Paper Edition with at least 102 (and 27 in Writing); Cambridge C1 Advanced with at least B in grade (and B in Writing); IELTS Academic, IELTS Online or IELTS UKVI (Academic) with at least 7.5 (and 7.0 in Writing); Pearson PTE Academic or PTE Academic Online with at least 76 (and 82 in Writing).

Selection

Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include:

  • documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area
  • analytical and creative thinking
  • initiative
  • independence
  • collaboration skills
  • ability to express oneself orally and in writing in both Swedish and English
  • available supervision competence

About the Position

We offer a fixed-term position as a PhD candidate according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The duration of employment may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a PhD candidate, you will primarily focus on your own doctoral education, but the position may also include limited work in education, research, and administration (maximum 20%).

A new position as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the position is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
