Do you want to contribute to better health for everyone?
Our research is internationally recognized for the development and evaluation of AI for radiological breast cancer diagnostics, with recent publications in journals such as Nature, Lancet Digital Health, Radiology, and MICCAI.
Data-driven Breast Radiology - Fredrik Strand's Research Group (https://ki.se/forskning/forskningsomraden-centrum-och-natverk/forskargrupper/datadriven-brostradiologi-fredrik-strands-forskargrupp) has expertise in radiology, biostatistics, and machine and deep learning. We have close collaborations with research groups at KTH and internationally with the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Barcelona. We are now seeking a research assistant in biostatistics or epidemiology to perform the tasks below and prepare for future doctoral studies.
The Project
You will contribute to an ongoing research project that examines fairness, equity, and generalizability of clinically used AI systems for mammography-based breast cancer diagnostics and risk prediction. The position is designed as a potential pathway to doctoral studies and is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
The primary focus will be on evaluating the performance of AI models across ethnic and socioeconomic subgroups. Depending on the applicant's background and interests, there may also be opportunities to fine-tune and de-bias AI models. The goal is to identify inequalities and, where methodologically justified, evaluate strategies to reduce them while maintaining clinical performance.
Your Role
Your tasks will include:
- Linking our existing retrospective mammography screening material with Swedish registers to extract additional information
- Quality assurance and cleaning of data
- Contributing to the statistical analysis plan
- Performing statistical analyses in R and Python
- Presenting results at internal meetings, scientific conferences, and to other stakeholders
- Publishing at least one original scientific article
- Participating in our weekly journal clubs where scientific articles are discussed
- Building a solid scientific foundation to be well-prepared for doctoral studies
Who Are You?
Qualifications
You should have:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, or a related field
- Experience in quantitative data analysis and statistical reasoning
- Strong skills in R and Python
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
It is advantageous if you:
- Demonstrate a strong scientific understanding and communication ability
- Show a very good ability to effectively participate in scientific project and research discussions
- Have completed projects related to cancer screening or radiology
- Have experience working with medical images in DICOM format
- Have experience extracting data from non-SQL databases, particularly MongoDB
