University of Gothenburg
The University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education programs attract researchers and students from around the world. Through new knowledge and perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.
The Department of Languages and Literatures is the largest department within the Faculty of Humanities, with 16 different languages, approximately 90 employees, around 1,300 full-time students, and an annual turnover of just over 110 million. The department's research addresses the world's languages and literatures from a broad contextualization and a wide range of theoretical foundations and specific applications. The activities are conducted within the Faculty of Humanities in modern premises centrally located near Götaplatsen.
Project Description
The program Unexplored Language Phenomena (UNLAP) is a groundbreaking initiative to explore the outer limits of human linguistic ability. In UNLAP, the focus of language research shifts from the common properties of languages to discovering and exploring exceptional linguistic phenomena that have so far eluded science. The world's linguistic diversity is far from fully mapped. Based on the research leadership's expertise in endangered language communities worldwide, the program launches an innovative agenda sharply focused on discovering the linguistically unknown. This includes a broad approach to areas fundamental to human conceptualization – time, space, person, and knowledge – while shining a light beyond the very boundaries of our current knowledge. The program has Uppsala University as its organizational center but is a collaboration between researchers at Uppsala University, Lund University, Stockholm University, University of Gothenburg, and the University of Oxford, with partnerships with additional universities worldwide.
Job Responsibilities
The position is part of the UNLAP research program. The job responsibilities include assisting the research team, particularly those members of the team located at the Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Gothenburg. A significant part of the job involves structuring and managing the primary data collected within the program, such as organizing audio files and assisting with – possibly automated – transcription and morphological annotation. The job also involves assisting and collaborating with the program's technical coordinator at the Humanities Laboratory, Lund University, as well as a teaching assistant at Stockholm University, in tasks related to equipment, research preparations, data management, and archiving. The work thus involves close contact with others working within the program, as well as at the Department of Languages and Literatures.
The work is performed partly on-site at the department, and the hired individual is expected to participate in on-site work at least once a month.
