Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Medicine, Division of Public Health and Community Medicine, conducts extensive teaching and research in areas such as health economics, biostatistics, global public health, register epidemiology, pharmaceutical use, and pharmaceutical policy.
Subject
Health Economics
Subject Description
The position will be part of the MedPREP project, funded by NordForsk as part of the initiative “Antagonistic threats challenging societal security in the Nordic and Baltic countries.” MedPREP aims to conduct research that can strengthen the resilience of healthcare systems through robust pharmaceutical preparedness, particularly regarding access, production, and governance of critical medicines. Shortages of critical medicines can lead to delays in patient treatment, less effective alternatives, and negative health effects.
Another challenge that MedPREP addresses is the lack of evidence regarding the costs and cost-effectiveness of preparedness measures, which complicates decision-makers' ability to allocate resources and make rational investment decisions. The project will conduct research that estimates the societal costs of alternative preparedness strategies, focusing on strategic stockpiling, preparedness pharmacies, and enabling critical domestic production capacity. The goal is to create a better understanding of the economic consequences of different preparedness models by providing insights into their cost-effectiveness and budget impact.
Responsibilities
The main task is to conduct health economic research within the MedPREP project, with the opportunity to develop and broaden the research focus based on the project's frameworks and the individual's scientific profile. The work may include health economic evaluations, such as cost-effectiveness analyses, as well as register-based analyses to evaluate policies and investments that strengthen pharmaceutical preparedness in a Nordic context. You are expected to work closely with MedPREP researchers at the University of Oslo and the University of Southern Denmark in Odense.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to collaborate with researchers within HEPER to contribute to a stimulating research environment and participate in the work with external research applications together with senior researchers. The position involves active participation in the research group's seminars and joint activities on campus.
Eligibility
Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who holds a PhD in a relevant subject area, or a foreign degree that is assessed to be equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than at the time the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, preference will be given to those who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who have completed their degree earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.
Assessment Criteria
A PhD in health economics, economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, or another closely related field is required for the position. The applicant must also have very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. The applicant must have demonstrated ability to independently write coherent scientific text, which should be substantiated by at least one scientific work of very high quality where the applicant is the main author and has had a significant responsibility for the manuscript's formulation.
Meritorious Qualifications for the Position:
- Good experience working with health economic research questions, preferably with health economic evaluation methods
- Good experience working with quantitative analyses (econometrics, biostatistics, modeling)
- Interest in conducting independent research within the research questions included in MedPREP
- Good experience working with statistical and health economic analyses in R and/or Stata
We also place great emphasis on personal suitability. You are structured, responsible, and have a good ability to drive tasks to completion in close collaboration with the research group. We also attach great importance to the ability and willingness to actively contribute to the research environment.
