Postdoctoral Researcher on the Effects of Extreme Weather Events

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of Europe’s most comprehensive earth science institutions with approximately 300 employees. The program for atmospheric, water, and landscape sciences, LUVAL, gathers research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. The Swedish Centre for Extreme Climate Events https://climes.se/ (https://climes.se/) is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Lund University, and RISE. The centre is at the core of a multidisciplinary scientific network and aims to organize various recurring meetings, international exchanges, and educational events. The centre also hosts several national and international research projects focusing on the effects of extreme climate events: from economic losses to impacts on ecosystems and effects on society and public health. Positions at the centre provide significant freedom to develop your own research ideas, generous funding for international stays within the centre's network, the opportunity to propose leading foreign experts to be invited to Sweden for research visits, and a strong focus on career development.

Job Responsibilities

You will work on data collection and/or analysis of the effects of extreme weather events in mid-latitudes. Within this framework, there is great freedom to focus on various specific topics or analytical methods. Teaching may be included, up to a maximum of 20%. You will be based at the Department of Earth Sciences in Uppsala but are expected to travel both within and outside Sweden.

Qualifications

A PhD in climate science, meteorology, disaster science, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related disciplines, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in the mentioned subjects. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have obtained their degree within the last three years will be considered. In calculating the three-year timeframe, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or positions of trust within trade unions, etc.

We are looking for someone who is driven, works independently, and is proactive. You should enjoy developing and testing new ideas. You should also demonstrate the ability to communicate your research effectively through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals and have excellent skills in expressing yourself in spoken and written English. You need to have good collaboration skills as the work involves cooperation with various international research circles and centres.

Desirable/meritorious

Previous experience with the analysis of large climate data sets and work with extreme weather is highly meritorious. We value high-quality publications in international journals with peer review.
