Teaching Assistant in Adapted School
Are you driven by helping others develop and do you find it easy to build relationships with those around you? Are you the one who finds a way forward when faced with problems in everyday life? Do you enjoy a job that has a clear structure yet is different every day? Then we believe that the position of teaching assistant in an adapted school might be for you!
Your Responsibilities
As a teaching assistant in an adapted school, you work closely with our students and provide support throughout their school day as well as during after-school care, both pedagogically, practically, and socially. Through a good relationship, you support and provide security to our students so that they can learn, develop, and make progress in their schooling and daily lives. Here, you will closely follow the students' developmental journey in school and together with both students and colleagues celebrate their progress.
Adapted schools exist for students with intellectual disabilities. Since our students have significant individual variations in their abilities and support needs, your tasks and working methods will vary both during the day and over time. Work in our organization is characterized by structure and predictability, while you also need to be flexible in your approach to the student. You are therefore expected to act with calmness and security while also challenging the student to develop and find creative solutions to the challenges that may arise.
Common Tasks Include:
- Clarifying the teacher's instructions during lessons, for example through verbal explanations, sign language support, sensory stimulation, or visual aids.
- Supporting students with practical challenges throughout the day, such as toilet visits/diaper changes, recess activities, during meals, meeting at taxi, lifting, and transfers.
- Participating in teaching alongside students.
- Conducting lessons as needed, based on the teacher's planning.
- Supporting students in social interactions with others.
- Documenting the student's school day by taking photos and writing reflections.
- Following students' self-care plans, such as testing blood sugar, injecting insulin, administering medication, and tube feeding.
- Participating in planning, follow-up, and collaboration regarding students' development.
- Supporting and preparing students for an independent life after school.
Your Workplace

The adapted primary school at Vallastadens School has about 60-70 students and offers instruction in subjects and subject areas, as well as after-school care. All our students have intellectual disabilities, and many also have other disabilities. Several communicate using alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) or other individually adapted means of expression. Our working method is characterized by close collaboration between teachers, where security, structure, and relationship-building are central to creating a meaningful and accessible learning environment for each student. It is important for us to always meet the students in a positive way and with a low-arousal approach.
The position is a full-time position with a 40-hour workweek, with working hours scheduled between 06:00-18:00.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who has a genuine interest in people and the ability to see each individual's strengths and abilities. You see opportunities where others may see obstacles or challenges. You should easily adapt your working methods to the student's daily condition and see changes as a natural part of everyday life.
It is a requirement that you have completed a secondary or adult education. It is advantageous if you have relevant training for the position, such as a nursing assistant, teaching assistant, childcare worker, or in child and youth care. It is also advantageous if you have worked with children or adolescents.
