The Department of Languages and Literatures is the largest department within the Faculty of Humanities, with 16 different languages, approximately 90 employees, around 1,090 full-year students, and an annual turnover of just over 110 million. The department's research covers the world's languages and literatures from a broad contextualization and a wide range of theoretical foundations and specific applications. Subject Description

The research in the subject of Latin at the University of Gothenburg is characterized by chronological and content breadth: from pre-classical to late antique Latin. Furthermore, both medieval and modern Latin are represented, and the research encompasses fields such as epigraphy, text editing, textual criticism, linguistics, reception history, history of disciplines, translation, history of science, and general editorial philology.

The education in Latin is offered both as independent courses at all levels - undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels - as well as within the Subject Teacher Program. The undergraduate level includes courses in Latin grammar, philological method, Latin literature, stylistics, and rhetoric, as well as writing a bachelor's thesis. At the advanced level, both thesis courses (magister and master's) and courses in Latin prose, poetry, epigraphy, the practice and theory of translation, and Latin writing with in-depth grammar and stylistic analysis are offered.

Job Responsibilities

An assistant lecturer should be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and teacher and to qualify both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for a position as a university lecturer. The job responsibilities include research of at least 50% according to an established research plan within Latin, as well as teaching and administration of a maximum of 50%.

Research includes selecting research questions, developing theoretical ideas, collecting data, and choosing research methods. One is expected to follow developments in their own subject area and actively apply for external research funding and participate in the department's scientific development work. Therefore, an assistant university lecturer should describe in their application how research in Latin can promote and contribute both to the research environment of the Latin subject and to the department's research areas. Latin collaborates closely with other ancient languages at the department, Greek and Old Church Slavonic. In the subject seminar in classical languages, researchers, doctoral students, and higher-level students in both Latin and Greek meet.

In education, the job responsibilities include teaching Latin at both undergraduate and advanced levels. Teaching also includes course design, assessment, and examination, as well as supervision, seminars, course responsibility, course administration, and course development, as well as participation in the department's pedagogical development work. Teaching in interdisciplinary courses and programs at the department may also be relevant, as well as administrative tasks. Teaching in Ancient Greek may occur.

Teaching is conducted both on campus and online, during both daytime and evening hours.

The majority of the work will be carried out at the Department of Languages and Literatures, University of Gothenburg, and the holder of the position is expected to participate actively and constructively in the work of the teaching team and also in the department's development and work environment efforts, which involves participation in workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences.
