Assistant Professor in International Law

The Faculty of Business Administration includes the Law Department at the University of Gothenburg. The Faculty has, with its more than 3,700 full-year students, 470 employees, 16 international partner universities, its main subjects - economics and law - and four departments, a unique breadth.
At the Law Department, exciting and interdisciplinary research and education are conducted in the field of law. Our Law program is one of the most sought-after programs in the country, and our research is characterized by both breadth and expertise. The department has expanded significantly in recent years and developed strong research environments. The department currently has about 100 employees in the categories of teachers, researchers, doctoral students, and administrative staff. Job Responsibilities
The position of Assistant Professor constitutes a step in a promotion system, and the job responsibilities include a maximum of 50% teaching and at least 50% research. Other departmental duties are expected to be included in the mentioned teaching and research tasks. The job responsibilities pertain to education at both undergraduate and advanced levels, where the main teaching will consist of teaching in the Law program, primarily in international law, international migration law, and theoretical issues related to equality, diversity, and non-discrimination. Teaching in other areas may also occur. Additional assignments in international law or public law at another institution outside the University of Gothenburg and at another workplace than Gothenburg may become relevant.
The job responsibilities also include maintaining and further developing a stimulating educational and research environment through teaching, supervision, and collaboration with teachers, researchers, doctoral students, and external contacts. Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate will actively and continuously participate in and further develop the department's and the Faculty's other activities. It is also assumed that the applicant will be active in seeking external research funding during the latter part of the employment.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as a teacher is specified in Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Higher Education Ordinance, Employment Regulations for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg GU 2024/3252, and Guidelines for Employment and Promotion of Teachers at the Faculty of Business Administration, University of Gothenburg GU 2025/3441.
Eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor is one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent competence within five years before the application period for the position of Assistant Professor has expired should be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
Assessment Criteria
According to the Guidelines for Employment and Promotion of Teachers at the Faculty of Business Administration, University of Gothenburg GU 2025/3441, the applicant should be selected based on a comprehensive assessment of competence and development potential, deemed to have the best conditions to perform the tasks included in the position. In expert assessments, particular emphasis shall be placed on demonstrated scientific competence and potential for further scientific activity within the position. Importance shall also be given to demonstrated pedagogical competence and conditions for continued pedagogical activity within the advertised position.
The applicant's personal qualities regarding the ability to collaborate internally and externally to perform the above-described job tasks will also be considered in the assessment of suitability for the position. Furthermore, competence in collaborating with the surrounding community and the ability to inform about research and development work nationally and internationally will be given weight. It is meritorious if the applicant has sought and obtained external funding either independently or in collaboration with other researchers in law or other disciplines.
The ability to teach in Swedish is a requirement.

Promotion to University Lecturer
Guidelines for Employment and Promotion of Teachers at the Faculty of Business Administration, University of Gothenburg GU 2025/3441, and the Employment Regulations for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg (GU 2024/1687). For the Assistant Professor to be promoted to University Lecturer, an application for promotion must be submitted to the department no later than six months before the four-year employment ends.
