Temporary Position as Lecturer in Military History

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned institution in defense, crisis management, and security. We offer a unique academic environment where civilian meets military. We educate civilian and military leaders, experts, and researchers who will analyze and manage today's and future crisis situations and security issues. The Swedish Defence University trains Sweden's officers and leads the academic development of the officer profession. We conduct research in law focusing on operational law and international law, defense systems, war science, leadership and management, military history, and political science.

The military historical research at the Swedish Defence University aims to support officer training by examining various aspects of the military profession and the history of warfare, as well as aspects of the relationship between military power and society in the past, which are significant in today's context. Through close collaboration with historical research environments outside the Swedish Defence University, the scientific relevance and broader societal benefits of the research are secured.

The Department of Military History has two divisions, the Division of Military History and the Language Center. The position is located at the Department of Military History (IMH) in Stockholm.

Subject Area Description

At the Swedish Defence University, the subject of history, particularly military history, focuses on studying the relationship between war, culture, and society, as well as the development of military strategy, operations, and tactics from historical perspectives.

Job Responsibilities

The position involves teaching and research as well as administration within the subject of history, particularly military history.

Eligibility

Eligible for appointment as a temporary lecturer is someone who has demonstrated pedagogical skill, has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence or other professional skills that are significant in relation to the subject matter of the position and the job responsibilities included in the appointment.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for the appointment of a lecturer shall be the degree of such skill that is a requirement for eligibility for the position. The assessment of pedagogical skill shall be given equal care as the assessment of scientific skill. Scientific skill must have been demonstrated through the ability to conduct independent high-quality research within the subject of history, particularly military history, as evidenced by publication in relevant, well-regarded international journals and publishers. Pedagogical skill must have been demonstrated through documented pedagogical competence through teaching, planning, and implementation of education at the university level.

Previous experience in teaching military history at the Swedish Defence University or another institution is an advantage. The applicant must be able to teach in both Swedish and English.

Where there is not a balanced gender representation, the Swedish Defence University may, in the case of equivalent or nearly equivalent qualifications among applicants, employ the underrepresented gender.

About the Position

The position is a temporary appointment at 100% with a start date from 2026-07-01 to 2027-06-30.

In cases where there is not a balanced gender representation, the Swedish Defence University may employ the underrepresented gender in the case of equal or nearly equal qualifications among applicants.

An appointment at the Swedish Defence University may involve a security clearance according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585).

The position may also involve military placement. If you are already militarily placed in your current position at an authority and your competence is needed in the Swedish Defence University's military organization, negotiations will take place between the relevant authority and the Swedish Defence University regarding where you will be placed.
