University Lecturer in Botany with a Focus on Cryptogam Systematics
University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with diverse knowledge. 58,000 students and 6,800 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Biology and Environmental Science (BioEnv), there is educational and research activity that spans from the ecosystems of the mountain world through forests, soils, and waterways all the way out to the sea. In these environments, we work with different biological organizational levels from genes via individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these subject areas to understand the significance of both natural and human-created biological systems and changes.
The department's activities are conducted at two different locations, GU's facilities in Natrium on Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Fiskebäckskil. The current position is based at the facilities in Gothenburg, where Herbarium GB is located. The latter houses more than a million specimens collected from around the world and is an integral part of an international network of nearly 4,000 herbaria worldwide.
Subjects
Cryptogam Systematics
Subject Description
The subject area is the scientific study of evolutionary relationships, diversity, and classification of non-vascular plants, fungi, and algae. The area integrates fieldwork, collection management at herbaria, and modern analytical methods to understand organisms' relationships in time and space. It thus forms a foundation for taxonomy, conservation, ecology, population genetics, and related subjects. The position contributes to the department's strengths in biodiversity research and management of scientific collections, as well as engaging students at both undergraduate and advanced levels through teaching, research, and supervision.

- Teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels in taxonomy, systematics, and related subjects within non-vascular plants, algae, and/or fungi. This includes lectures, coordination of practical components, course responsibility, and supervision of theses at both undergraduate and advanced levels.
- Participation in the development and renewal of teaching, both in terms of content and form, as part of a larger teaching team.
- Development of and engagement in a long-term research program where herbarium material is an integral part, focusing on non-vascular plants, fungi, and/or algae.
- Development of collaborations with other research groups within and outside the department.
- Building and leading a research group, including applications for external research funding and publishing in high-quality scientific journals.
- Supervision of doctoral students.
- Participation in and development of projects for collaboration with society.
