The Department of Medicine, Division of Community Medicine and Public Health, conducts extensive teaching and research in areas such as health economics, biostatistics, global public health, registry epidemiology, medication use, and general and social medicine.

The position involves close collaboration within and between these environments as well as with other institutions.

Subject Description

The position is funded through two externally funded projects that study the organization of primary care and its effects on efficiency, equity, work ability, and return to work using Swedish registry data. The projects also highlight the importance of the doctor-patient relationship for medication treatment and sick leave.

The position offers good opportunities for registry-based research with Swedish population and health data in a strong interdisciplinary environment, in collaboration with researchers in economics, biostatistics, epidemiology, general medicine, and occupational and environmental medicine.

Job Duties

The main task is to conduct high-quality quantitative research on the organization and markets of health care and their significance for work ability. The work is carried out independently and in interdisciplinary collaboration with Swedish registry data, closely connected to HEPER, Centre for Health Governance, and ReWork.

The job duties include registry-based analyses of the organization of primary care, doctor-patient relationships, and the labor market for doctors, as well as studies of factors and policies that affect return to work. There is an opportunity to further develop both research direction and personal scientific profile.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute to an active research environment, participate in external applications together with senior researchers, and engage in seminars and joint activities.

Eligibility

Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who holds a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled no later than at the time the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, preference should be given to those who have obtained their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Those who have obtained their degree earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant assignments in the subject area.

Assessment Criteria

A doctoral degree in health economics, economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, or another closely related field is required for the position. The applicant must also have very good knowledge of English in both spoken and written form. The applicant must have demonstrated ability to independently write coherent scientific text, which should be substantiated by at least one scientific work of very high quality where the applicant is the main author and has had significant responsibility for the manuscript's design.

Meritorious Qualifications for the Position:

  • Very good experience in working with quantitative analyses (econometrics, biostatistics, epidemiology)
  • Documented experience in working with large registry data sets
  • Good experience in working with statistical and econometric analyses in R, Stata, or similar statistical software.
  • Interest in conducting independent research within the research questions mentioned in the Job Description

Employment

Employment type: Fixed-term employment, 24 months.
Scope: 100%, full-time.
Location: Department of Medicine, Gothenburg.
Start date: August 2026 or by agreement.
