University Lecturer in Botany with a Focus on Vascular Plant Systematics

At the Department of Biology and Environmental Science (BioEnv), there is educational and research activity that ranges from the ecosystems of the mountain world, through forests, soils, and waterways, all the way out to the sea. In these environments, we work with different biological organizational levels from genes, through individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, and combinations of these subject areas to understand natural biological systems as well as the significance of human-induced changes.
The department's activities are conducted at two different locations, GU's premises in Natrium on Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Fiskebäckskil. The current position is located at the premises in Gothenburg, where Herbarium GB is situated. The latter houses more than a million specimens collected from around the world and is an integral part of an international network with nearly 4,000 herbaria worldwide.

Subject Description
Vascular plant systematics is the scientific study of the evolutionary relationships, diversity, and taxonomy of vascular plants. The subject combines fieldwork, herbarium management, and modern analytical methods to illuminate plant relationships in time and space as well as connections to conservation, ecology, population genetics, and related disciplines. The position strengthens the department in biodiversity research and contributes to the management and development of scientific collections. It also includes active engagement in education at the undergraduate and advanced levels through teaching, research, and supervision.
Job Responsibilities
The lecturer position encompasses 60% research and teaching in botany and 40% collection management work with the vascular plant collections at Herbarium GB.
Teaching and Research Responsibilities Include:
- Teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels in plant taxonomy, systematics, and related subjects. This includes lectures, coordination of practical elements, course responsibility, and supervision of theses at the undergraduate and advanced levels.
- As part of a larger teaching team, the successful candidate is also expected to participate in the development and renewal of teaching, both in terms of content and form.
- Development of and engagement in a long-term and substantial research program where herbarium material is an integral part, focusing on vascular plants.
- Development of collaborations with other research groups within and outside the department.
- Building and leading a research group, including applications for external research funding and publication in high-quality scientific journals.
- Supervision of doctoral students.
- Participation in and development of projects for collaboration with society.
Collection Management Responsibilities Include:
- Management and development of the vascular plant collections at Herbarium GB.
- Contributing to the integration of Herbarium GB in teaching, research, and the surrounding community.
- Support for digitization and database cataloging in accordance with international standards for specimen data.
- Support for visiting researchers and promoting collaborations with national and international institutions.
- Participation in applications for research funding and in the development of strategic goals for Herbarium GB.
If you do not have formal higher education pedagogical training, such training must be completed within two years of taking up the position. The university offers courses in higher education pedagogy.
You must be able to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses in Swedish.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as a teacher is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 and the employment regulations of Gothenburg University.
Eligible for employment as a university lecturer in areas other than artistic activities is someone who has demonstrated pedagogical skill, has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence or other skills that are significant in relation to the subject content of the position and the tasks that will be included in the position.
Some experience in collection management at herbaria and collection-based plant research is a requirement. In addition, good knowledge of the diversity of vascular plants and documented research experience in vascular plant taxonomy and nomenclature is required.
Employment
The employment is permanent, 100% position, placed at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science. Start as soon as possible or by agreement. A probationary period may be applied.
