About the position
As a customs officer in the external control group, you will primarily work with conducting inspections of goods in the flow of cargo and travelers to and from Sweden. This may include searching containers, ships, vehicles, luggage, warehouses, and terminals to find goods that are not approved for import or export from Sweden. Examples of such goods include narcotics, pharmaceuticals, weapons, and restricted items that do not meet EU requirements, such as dangerous toys and electronics. The work may also involve administrative tasks where you check customs declarations to ensure that the correct fees are paid and that import and export restrictions are followed. The position also involves making decisions on coercive measures, which may include detaining individuals, reporting crimes, and conducting interviews.
As a customs officer, you will work in uniform and armed, making various forms of official decisions and interacting daily with the public and customers. We place great importance on your ability to treat people with respect and understanding, that you have good judgment, and that you are a good representative of the Swedish Customs both internally and externally.
We are looking for someone who has:
- High school education with at least passing grades in Mathematics, Social Studies, Swedish, and English
- At least four years of work experience
- Good communication skills and the ability to express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish and English
- Swedish driver's license, class B for passenger cars, and very good driving experience
- Normal color vision
- The job requires good physical condition and health since working hours can be irregular and the work and training are physically demanding
- Swimming ability of 200 meters breaststroke
It is an advantage if you have:
- Experience in taking responsibility and/or leading others – this can be in work, community life, sports, or other contexts where you have had a leadership role
- Experience in roles where you have had a lot of contact with people and needed to adapt your approach and communication
- The ability to communicate fluently in spoken languages other than Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and English that the employer deems relevant
Personal qualities
The work is done in groups, which requires that you have great social competence and good teamwork skills. You are self-assured, responsible, service-oriented, have integrity, and can work independently within given frameworks and dare to take your own initiatives. As a person, you are stable, handle pressure well, and maintain composure even in stressful situations. Other important qualities are that you are legally aware, have the ability to comply with laws and regulations, and have good judgment. You have a flexible attitude and can quickly adapt to changing conditions.
Training and employment
The employment start date is August 31. You will begin your employment as a customs trainee with a basic training program divided into theoretical and practical parts over approximately 16 months. The theoretical part alternates with practical moments and self-study at a distance, which places high demands on you to take responsibility for your studies. About 100 training days during the theoretical part will be held with attendance in Stockholm. The practical part will be conducted at the stationing location. The starting salary during the training period is 25,800 SEK. After successful completion of the basic training, the trainee position will end and transition to a permanent position with a salary of 31,000 SEK.
