Here, research and education focus on human health and quality of life. The Department of Clinical Sciences is organized into four sections and 16 different subject areas.

The position of Assistant Professor is located at the Department of Pediatrics within the Department of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy. The Department of Pediatrics conducts extensive research on the growing child from the newborn period within both corresponding medical and surgical subjects, primarily through clinical studies, experimental research, and research based on quality registers. The department participates in various educational programs of the faculty and conducts several specialist competence courses.

Subject Description

In pediatrics, there is a growing number of survivors who are born with genetic or epigenetic changes leading to syndromic conditions. Many epigenetic conditions involve disturbances in genes that control methylation processes. Examples of such syndromes include Prader-Willi, Silver-Russell, Rett, Angelman, or Fragile X. All have feeding difficulties, growth retardation, neuropsychiatric disabilities, cognitive comorbidities, abnormal development of body composition, and metabolic abnormalities as teenagers. As a pediatric specialist knowledgeable in neurology, endocrinology, or gastroenterology, the applicant collaborates scientifically with clinical genetics, psychiatry, nutritionists, ophthalmologists, and dentists.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels in pediatrics, examination, and other components within semester 9 of the medical education program. Supervision of students and doctoral candidates at all educational levels is included. Teaching and supervision are primarily conducted in Swedish.

Additionally, the responsibilities include conducting research in epigenetics for rare syndromes in pediatrics. It is expected that the appointee conducts research at a nationally and internationally competitive level. Furthermore, the appointee should actively seek national external research grants.

The position also involves collaboration with the surrounding community.

The appointee who lacks higher education pedagogical training must undergo such training within one year from the start of the appointment.

Eligibility

Eligibility for the position of Assistant Professor is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance and Gothenburg University's employment regulations.

Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has reached equivalent competence within seven years before the application period for the position of Assistant Professor has expired should be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Reasons, dates, and extent of absence must be clearly specified in the application and substantiated with certificates.

The ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement.
