PhD Positions in Mathematics Education

The Department of Subject Education has around 280 employees.

We conduct research on learning and teaching in relation to various subjects at all stages of the education system. Our research in mathematics education consists of a wide range of studies. More information can be found here: Department of Subject Education (http://www.su.se/forskning/forskningsprojekt/remath-researching-practice-based-mathematics-teacher-education-en-nationell-forskarskola).

Project Description

The PhD education is conducted in the research school REMATHII, funded by the Swedish Research Council. The aim of the research school is to make visible how mathematics teachers' work and practice, at all levels of the school system, can be made accessible for teacher students' learning. The central question of the research school is what is required for mathematics teacher students to acquire the professional knowledge and skills needed for well-founded and equitable teaching.

A total of nine PhD positions are announced within REMATH II: Stockholm University (3); Karlstad University (2); Linköping University (2); and Mälardalen University (2). To be employed at a university, one must have submitted an application to that specific university.

Eligibility Requirements

To be admitted to PhD education, the applicant must have general and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the last application date.

General eligibility is met if you have obtained a degree at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or in another way acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

For specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education in mathematics education focusing on school mathematics (preschool, primary school, and upper secondary school), the applicant must have completed teacher education that includes mathematics, or have approved courses in a subject area directly relevant to the focus of the education. Approved courses must correspond to at least 90 hp, including at least 30 hp at the advanced level in mathematics education, mathematics, or a similar relevant main area, of which at least 15 hp is a thesis. For specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education in mathematics education focusing on higher education mathematics, the applicant must have passed courses of 90 hp in mathematics including a thesis of 15 hp, and at least 30 hp at the advanced level in mathematics education or a similar relevant main area, of which at least 15 hp is a thesis.

The eligibility requirements can also be met by those who have acquired substantially equivalent competence within or outside the country. For specific eligibility, the applicant must master either Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English, i.e., the ability to read, speak, and write in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English.

Any assessment of equivalent eligibility is made by the department's Research Committee, and decisions are made by the departmental board.

Selection

Selection among the applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include:

  • Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area. Assessment is made considering both depth and breadth in previous education.
  • Previous scientific production. Theses from undergraduate and advanced levels as well as, where applicable, other written scientific production demonstrate the applicant's ability to benefit from the education. The assessment also takes into account the time aspect, i.e., whether the applicant has shown the ability to complete their previous scientific tasks within given time frames.
  • Research plan. In connection with the application, the applicant must describe their intended research area. The description should include a project name, problem formulation(s), and a sketch of the implementation of the research work and be a maximum of 2000 words.
  • Available supervisory competence.
  • Collaboration ability. The applicant's ability to collaborate is assessed based on references, certificates, or interviews.
