Postdoctoral Researcher in Electrochemical Modeling of Li-ion Battery Cells

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry.

The department has 270 employees and an annual turnover of 290 million SEK. Our six programs conduct highly successful research of international caliber. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often in international collaboration, and we see continued good growth in our field. The department has educational assignments within engineering and master’s programs. More information can be found on our website (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom).

The Structural Chemistry program at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström has been focused for many years on the development of materials and applications in the battery field: Ångström Advanced Battery Center. We develop new electrode and electrolyte materials, characterize them, improve the materials regarding battery performance, and study fundamental chemical properties in batteries using both experimental and theoretical methods. Thus, the research is both fundamental and applied.

Project Description (https://www.uu.se/om-uu/jobba-hos-oss/)

Project Description

The project concerns electrochemical modeling of Li-ion battery cells. New types of materials will affect current distribution in the cells. The project involves modeling ion transport and electron transport in the battery based on geometric design and material selection. The research will be conducted in international collaboration.

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities for a postdoctoral researcher are to conduct research. These may also include teaching, up to 20% of the working time. Supervision of thesis students and PhD candidates may occur. Collaboration with other academic actors and industry will be necessary for the project. The research primarily involves physical modeling of Li-ion battery cells using finite element methods.

Qualifications:

A PhD in chemistry, physics, or engineering sciences, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in one of these subjects. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preference should be given to those who have obtained their degree within the last three years. When calculating the three-year time frame, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc.

The assessment of applications is primarily based on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific competence. Greater emphasis is placed on the quality of each individual scientific work than on the quantity of publications.

Consideration is also given to good collaborative skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant's experience and competence complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and how they can contribute to its future development.

The applicant should be well acquainted with modeling techniques and software for multiphysics and/or Li-ion batteries (Ansys, Comsol, PyBaMM, or similar). The applicant must have a very good command of English, both spoken and written.

Desirable/meritorious

Experience in battery technology, particularly Li-ion batteries, is meritorious, as well as material modeling (DFT, MD, etc.). Programming skills are valuable.
