Postdoctoral Researcher in Extreme Climate Events and Public Health
Do you want to work at the interface of climate science, public health, and climate adaptation, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's largest and most versatile institution of its kind with a unique breadth. We currently have about 300 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural sciences and engineering with social sciences. We have research programs in air, water, and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics; paleobiology and wind energy. By studying the Earth's history, we understand how the planet has developed and how our pursuit of sustainable development can benefit from this knowledge. The position is within the program for air, water, and landscape science, LUVAL, which gathers research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. See; for more information about the program at https://www.uu.se/institution/geovetenskaper/forskning/luft--vatten--och-landskapslara (https://www.uu.se/institution/geovetenskaper/forskning/luft--vatten--och-landskapslara).
You will specifically work in a research group focusing on the dynamics, predictability, and impacts of extreme climate events, coordinated by G. Messori. The research group is involved in several H2020/Horizon Europe and nationally funded projects, and group members are experts in various fields. You can find more information here: https://gmessori.eu/ (https://gmessori.eu/). The position is linked to the DATE and PROMETHEUS projects, coordinated by Karolinska Institute together with Uppsala University, University of Manchester, Human Technopole, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. You will work closely with international experts in public health, health sciences, climate science, social sciences, and statistics. You will also be part of the Swedish Centre for Extreme Climate Events (climes, http://www.climes.se (http://www.climes.se)). Climes is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Lund University, and RISE. The center is the core of a multidisciplinary research community and regularly coordinates scientific meetings, international exchanges, and training opportunities.
Job Responsibilities
Your main task is to conduct research within two national projects focusing on how extreme climate events and climate-related factors affect public health. More specifically, you will combine and analyze large climate and health databases. You will identify and characterize extreme climate events using established metrics and apply advanced statistical and data-driven models, such as distributed lag non-linear models (DLNM) and neural networks, to investigate temporal and non-linear relationships with negative health effects. The work will contribute to the development of risk maps for health and climate.
As part of your work, you are expected to collaborate with researchers from other institutions within the projects. You will be placed at the Department of Earth Sciences in Uppsala. You are expected to conduct your work on-site at the department. National and international travel may occur. Teaching may be included in the position up to 20%.
Qualifications
PhD in statistics, epidemiology, climate science, meteorology, computer science, or related disciplines or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a PhD in the mentioned subjects. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have completed their degree within the last three years will be considered. When calculating the three-year timeframe, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or trust assignments within trade unions, etc.
We are looking for a proactive researcher who can work both independently and as part of an international research consortium, with a strong drive to innovate and test new ideas. You should demonstrate strong analytical thinking and the ability to handle complex, high-dimensional data. You should also show the ability to communicate your research effectively through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals and have excellent skills in expressing yourself verbally and in writing in English.
Desirable/meritorious
Previous experience with the analysis of large climate data and public health data is highly meritorious. We value high quality publications in international journals with peer review and collaboration in a multidisciplinary research environment.
Application should include:
- A Curriculum Vitae.
- A list of publications in international journals with peer review.
- Two references (names and complete contact details, including phone numbers). Reference letters are not requested.
In this recruitment, we have replaced the personal letter with questions that you will answer as part of your application. The answers will be used as part of the selection process.
