Postdoctoral Position at Uppsala University
Are you interested in developing statistical models to map forest characteristics and thereby contribute to more sustainable and biodiversity-promoting forest management – with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international research environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employee engagement and offers secure and favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University.
The Department of Organism Biology (https://www.uu.se/institution/organismbiologi/ (https://www.uu.se/institution/organismbiologi/)) conducts research and teaching on the evolution, development, and function of organisms. The position is located at the Biodiversity Data Lab (https://www.biodiversity.se/ (https://www.biodiversity.se/)), a young and dynamic research group led by Tobias Andermann. We work at the intersection of computational biology and biodiversity research, developing computational methods and field and laboratory workflows to quantify biodiversity in a standardized and reproducible way. Our vision is to contribute high-quality research with significant impact to counteract the biodiversity crisis.
The position is administratively placed at Uppsala University but involves close collaboration with SLU Umeå, Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environment, where co-supervisor and project coordinator Jörgen Sjögren (restoration ecology) is based. Regular research visits to Umeå may be included.
Job Responsibilities
The project addresses an urgent question for the future of forestry in Sweden: what proportion of the country’s forests is suitable for continuous cover forestry (CCF) and where are these forests located?
CCF requires forests with multi-layered tree canopies, but currently, there is a lack of national knowledge about their geographical distribution.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will:
- collect and prepare data together with experts in remote sensing and forest data
- develop and implement statistical models to identify forests suitable for CCF.
- Carefully distinguish between forests suitable for CCF and forests with high natural values that should instead be prioritized for conservation purposes.
- Contribute to estimates of what proportion of the forest is currently suitable for CCF and how this potential changes over time.
Qualifications
PhD in biology, geoscience, information technology, or a related field (or equivalent foreign degree). The degree must be obtained no later than the decision on employment. Priority will be given to applicants who have obtained their PhD no more than three years before the application deadline (exceptions may be made for e.g. parental leave, illness, or union work).
- Documented experience working with remote sensing data and statistical models, preferably in a spatial modeling context.
- Very good ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
- Able to work independently, take initiative, and drive projects forward.
Desirable/meritorious qualifications
- Previous experience in research related to biodiversity and/or forestry.
- Programming skills in Python, R, or equivalent.
- Experience with GIS software or other tools for spatial visualization.
- Familiarity with working on computing clusters and collaborative coding (e.g. Git) and environment management tools (e.g. conda, Docker).
About the Employment
The employment is temporary for 2 years according to the central collective agreement. The extent is full-time. Start date April 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala with regular research visits to SLU Umeå.
