Are you an ecologist with an interest in making a difference in urban development in Uppsala? Then you might be the one we are looking for. Welcome with your application!

About Uppsala

Uppsala is one of Sweden's four major cities with over 200,000 inhabitants, and we are growing rapidly. One of our goals is for Uppsala Municipality to grow to 350,000 inhabitants by 2050. At the same time, we have high ambitions and actively work with the municipality's green areas, focusing on both quality and accessibility.

Job Responsibilities

As an ecologist with us, you will have a stimulating and developing job where you can influence and contribute to Uppsala's positive development. You will work at the Urban Planning Department and be part of the Park Nature division, placed in the Forest-Nature unit. The division consists of about 120 employees. Within the municipality, there are many cross-departmental processes where you as an ecologist have a well-developed collaboration both within the division and with colleagues in other parts of the Urban Planning Department, including the planning and building, strategic planning, and land and exploitation departments. In other words, you will have a very varied job and are expected to become a spider in the web.

The Forest-Nature unit is in a developing phase, where our knowledge and the measures we implement are increasingly requested and are part of a larger context. Within the unit, there is both practical implementation with forest workers at the forefront, supervisors, nature conservation officers, and reserve managers. There are 14 of us in the unit.

Our vision is to be a role model and pioneer as an attractive employer in the public sector. We collaborate to harness new ideas and work innovatively to support the development of Uppsala Municipality as a modern employer. The position requires a significant amount of physical presence in the forest, and you will work both at Uppsala City Hall and at our office in Kåbo.

Job Description

As an ecologist, you have a significant responsibility to support colleagues in safeguarding and developing the municipality's work with the ecological values in the urban-adjacent forests and nature reserves. You are expected to be knowledgeable and a driving force. You should also have good experience and practical skills in planning conservation measures in forest environments. There is always a clear connection to the practical work that creates value among the trees and in open areas.

Your work includes:

  • Planning conservation measures with particular responsibility for ecological compensation (reinforcement measures for the cinnabar beetle).
  • Monitoring implemented conservation measures
  • Developing urban-adjacent forests
  • Supervising contractors or own forestry resources
  • Driving improvement work
  • Developing routines and guidelines
  • Handling feedback
  • Finding solutions to balance ecological values with accessibility to nature for the well-being of residents.
  • Dialogue with local residents and stakeholders
  • Educating and informing the public about forests, nature, and maintenance measures.
  • Providing expert knowledge within and between units
  • Supporting reserve management.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a scientific university or college degree in biology, forestry, or another education that the employer deems equivalent. The job requires you to have a B driver's license.

We would like you to have experience in practical planning, preferably from government or business. It is an advantage if you have experience speaking in front of groups and political committees and can express yourself clearly and professionally in Swedish, both orally and in writing. If you have good knowledge of relevant laws and procedures for conservation measures, good GIS competence, and experience working in GIS applications, this is considered an advantage. It is also positive if you are used to driving change work and are accustomed to conveying complex ecological issues in a pedagogical and accessible way.

As a person, you are communicative and have an easy time listening and adapting your communication style. You take responsibility for your tasks and plan, organize, and prioritize your work effectively. Furthermore, you have the ability to see the big picture and view issues from a broader perspective. You are good at seeing the whole and solving complex questions and problems. Last but not least, you collaborate and relate to others in a responsive and smooth manner.
