We are now looking for one or more PhD candidates for the Department of Communication Systems at the Institute of Technology (ISY).

Your Responsibilities

Much of the traffic in upcoming 6G networks, both over the wireless interface and within the core network, will be driven by AI and machine learning applications.

The research will develop effective communication strategies to support decentralized machine learning in 6G networks and design machine learning algorithms that can handle errors that are impractical to solve at the physical layer. The focus of the research is on fundamental limits and the development of algorithms and methods. Applications include, for example, signal, image, and video processing for autonomous vehicles and drone swarms; massive telemetry; distributed sensing; and augmented/extended reality.

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research projects you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time.

Your Qualifications

You have completed a master's degree in electrical and systems engineering, computer science, or applied mathematics with at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at the master's level in electrical and systems engineering or applied mathematics, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. The degree requirement must be met by the time the employment decision is made, i.e., when the employment contract is signed.

Applicants must demonstrate very good mathematical maturity, possess strong programming skills, and have excellent communication skills in English, both spoken and written.

About the Employment

Upon commencement of employment, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.

The employment is temporary for four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment for up to five years may occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extension may occur.
